Friday, May 22

With the sun shining more brightly this week, there is a palpable sense that the end of the school year is just around the corner.

As we head into the final week of classes for our Grade 9 to 12 students, we want to remind them that teachers will be available during the Study Day next Friday to support them with their exam preparation. We also look forward to celebrating our community’s achievements and spirit with two special events next week:

  • Spring & End of Year Athletic Assembly: Tuesday

As always, you are more than welcome to join us for these milestones.

Have a great weekend,

Rental Instrument Return

Students enrolled in a Band class who rent their instruments from the school are reminded that all Band instruments, books, and folders must be returned to the Band room by Friday, June 5th.  This also includes any home instruments (such as tubas, bell kits, drumsticks and mallets).  If your child wishes to keep their instrument over the summer, please have them speak to their Band teacher. If they are currently enrolled in a Band class, they can return these items during their classes.

All graduating students need to ensure that they have returned all items to the Band room and if applicable, picked up their personal instruments before they leave.

Thanks for an awesome Band season, and we look forward to seeing you in the fall!

Grade 11 Parents: Core Strengths Program This Fall

One of the cornerstones of the leadership training we are providing to all Grade 12 students this year is the Core Strengths program. Used in hundreds of workplaces to help develop leaders and build relationship intelligence, the award-winning Core Strengths program will provide our graduates with self-knowledge, skills and strategies to become high-achieving, confident and effective leaders in the future. The Core Strengths assessment fees are $110 per student and will be billed to student accounts. The program implementation will begin the first week of school and run through the year, and will be led by Havergal employees who have become certified Core Strengths facilitators. For more information, please see the Core Strengths website. For Havergal contact information on the program, feel free to reach out Krista Koekkoek.

Institute for Global Learning

The Institute for Global Learning hosts an annual Student Action Summit. This year’s topic is “Navigating Truth in the Age of Social Media.” The Student Action Summit brings together thoughtful, change-driven students to explore how social media shapes our understanding of truth, communication, and civic engagement. Social media is one of the most influential spaces where ideas are formed, shared, and acted upon, offering both opportunities for connection and real challenges for discernment. The summit will include student-led dialogues, breakout sessions and collaborative action planning.

  • Hosted by: The Altamont School in Birmingham, Alabama
  • Thursday, October 22 to Sunday, October 25, 2026
  • Grade 9-12
  • Approximately $1200

Please email Fatima Kaba if you require more information or would like to register your child.

June Exams

Exams for Grade 9-12 courses begin on Monday, June 1. The full schedule is here.

All Senior School exams are two hours in duration; morning exams start at 9:00 am, afternoon exams at 1:00 pm. Standard-time exams will all take place in the Double Gym; students with accommodations will write all their exams in B65/B66. Students should arrive 15 minutes early for each exam, in their regular school uniform.

From Monday, June 1 to Wednesday, June 10, Senior School students are not required to be at school except during the time their exam is being written.

If your child is ill on the day of the exam, please report their absence on the Parent Portal as you would on a regular school day.

Please note that a final summative evaluation is required to complete each Senior School course. Medical documentation must be provided for any exam absence, and the exam must be made up at another time and place. Contact Jennifer Goldberg, Director of Academics, for more information.

Calculator Check: As hundreds of students are writing exams at the same time, we ask that you double-check with your daughter that she has her own calculator. She will not be able to borrow one at school.

Thursday, May 14

It has been an incredible, high-energy week on campus! Wednesday was House Shout, where the weather held out perfectly as each House showcased its spirit and creativity with some truly impressive (and loud!) themed cheers. We were also blown away by the talent on display at the Senior Art and Design Reception, which featured a stunning array of film, digital media, and traditional art.

The creativity continued with our Fashion Showcase Prayers, highlighting the hard work of students in our inaugural Tanya Taylor fashion course. Students proudly showcased their pieces to an enthusiastic crowd of peers.

To cap it all off, the excitement is palpable today as our students head out for the HC Prom tonight. We wish everyone a safe and wonderful evening, making memories!

Have a great long weekend,

Krista, Cissy & Deirdre

Next Week in Morning Programming

Next week, our students will participate in a special reflection session through our Win@Social program. As they look back on the past year, we are challenging them to set goals for the summer and beyond with a twist.

Instead of just listing activities, we’re asking students to “think backward”:

  • Identify a Mindset: Start with a specific skill or mindset they want to grow (e.g. creativity or leadership).
  • Find the Action: Then, brainstorm activities that will help them explore and strengthen that trait.

By focusing on who they want to become before what they want to do, we hope to help students find more purpose in their summer plans.

Supporting our Food Drive

Our Middle School leaders are hard at work rallying their Form mates to support our local community, but they need your help.

The Challenge: At this time of year, food bank shelves are often at their lowest, while the need in our community remains high. We are making a final push to fill the gap and ensure no family goes without.

How You Can Help: We are asking each family to consider sending in 3–5 non-perishable items this week. We are specifically looking for:

  • Pasta & Pasta Sauce
  • Canned Meats (Tuna, chicken, etc.)
  • Hearty Soups or Stews

Every item brought in by a student directly supports our Middle School’s mission to lead with empathy and action. Thank you for helping our leaders make a tangible difference!

Next Week in Morning Programming

As we approach the end of the year, there are many heartfelt good-byes to be had. Tuesday and Thursday are special Prayers to honour the Class of 2026 in different ways. On Wednesday, students will have their last TA session, during which their Teacher Advisor and advisory group will celebrate the Grads. It will be a special time to say goodbye to the group who have met with your daughter each morning over their time in the Senior School.

Friday, May 8

This week, we honoured Pride Week, a time for both celebration and reflection. It was moving to see our students lead the way in Tuesday’s Prayers, discussing how Pride is portrayed in the media and proudly sharing their own lived experiences.

The spirit of advocacy continued on in our Thursday’s Prayers where students focussed on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. Our students challenged us to consider our role in action – clearly already invested in living our school mission.

The intellectual life of the school was also on full display during Monday’s Upper School Faculty meeting. We were joined by Rachelle, Isabel, and Jana, representing our AP classes and Futures & Foresight Microcredentials. Their presentation was a powerful testament to our academic program and the collective learning that happens when students and teachers engage deeply with complex material.

Finally, we were pleased to welcome back several Old Girls/Alum from the Classes of 2022 through 2025 on Thursday. They spent time sharing fresh perspectives with our current grads, reminding us that the Havergal bond is a lifelong support system. As we approach Graduation, it is clear that these ties provide a foundation of community that will follow our students long after they leave our halls.

Have a lovely weekend,

Krista, Deirdre & Cissy

Every donation brings us closer to our goal and supports our local community.

Friday, May 1

This week at Havergal, our community connected through a vibrant mix of celebration, leadership, and global excellence. In Prayers this week, we were grounded in diverse perspectives, honouring Indigenous Entrepreneurship, with guest speaker Chelsee Petitt, and Asian Heritage Month. Chelsea reminded us of the power of dreaming big and the necessity of pivoting in business to remain relevant. Our students shared the profound cultural impact of music in their presentation of various Asian musicians.

The torch of leadership is also beginning its transition. We were thrilled to introduce Sabrina as our next School Captain; her warm reception reflects the school’s confidence in her ability to model our school values. As we look ahead, we remain deeply grateful to Naomi and her team for their ongoing dedication to our community.

Our students’ talents and engagement reached new heights—both on stage and on the world stage:

  • The Grade 12 Drama class captivated us with their exam performance of Maya’s original one-act play.
  • Our DECA team returned from Atlanta with eight awards, including three students ranking in the Top 10 globally.
  • We capped off the week with an incredible Relay for Life, raising over $250,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
  • We celebrated all of our students who participated in exchanges this year over lunch, sharing all that they had gleaned from their experiences worldwide.

Whether they were raising money for local causes or competing internationally, our students showed us what it means to lead with both passion and perspective.

We hope you have a great weekend,

Krista, Cissy & Deirdre

Announcing Our New Board Chair

We are pleased to announce that Kate Horton ‘94 will be appointed as the new Chair of the Board of Governors this September. An alumna and current parent, Kate is the President and CEO of Ronald McDonald House Canada. Her extensive experience in strategic leadership and her deep connection to the school will be invaluable as she guides Havergal’s long-term vision and sustainability.

We also share our deepest gratitude for outgoing Chair Jill Fraser ‘87. During her tenure, Jill was instrumental in launching the Empowering Excellence strategic plan, laying the groundwork for a substantial expansion of our outdoor athletic and play facilities, including a new Junior School playscape, refurbished tennis courts, lower pitch revitalization and preparations for a new turf field and seasonal dome. Her dedication to advancing girls’ education and athletics has left a lasting impact on our community. To ensure a seamless leadership transition and maintain governance continuity, Jill will serve as Past Chair for the coming year, providing strategic support to Kate in her new role.As we look toward the fall, we are excited to build on this momentum. Kate will officially assume her role following the Annual General Meeting on September 21, and you can look forward to her first formal community message in the October edition of Inside Havergal.

It has been a pleasure to witness their increasing confidence and the poise they now demonstrate when speaking to their peers.

Friday, April 24

On Thursday, April 23rd, our school community gathered at St. Paul’s Bloor St. for a Founder’s Day that felt particularly momentous. This year holds profound significance as we celebrate the centenary of the laying of our original cornerstone at Lawrence and Avenue Road—a hundred-year legacy of community and excellence.

Founder’s Day is the one time each year when our entire school comes together to celebrate as one. The energy this year was elevated by fantastic choirs from Junior, Middle and Senior schools and by Dr. Samson’s reflection on the Artemis II Space Mission. As we watched individuals literally “shoot for the moon,” we were reminded of the world’s need for bold vision and the courage to explore the unknown.

The reflections then shifted from the cosmic to the deeply personal. Liz Watt (Assistant Head of Junior School) challenged us to consider: “What if today was not just another day, but a day that someone remembers because of you?” Grade 12 student Anaya J shared a moving retrospective on their journey since Grade 8. Crediting their growth to both our expansive programs and the simple joy found in everyday moments with peers, Anaya left us with a vital takeaway: true success comes when you embrace your authentic self. She tasked us all to be ‘unapologetically’ ourselves.

There is perhaps no better charge for our community than that. As we head into the weekend, we hope you find joy in the small moments and the confidence to be unapologetically you.

Have a lovely weekend,

Cissy, Deirdre and Krista

Your feedback will help us gauge whether there is sufficient collective interest and long-term commitment to make this program a reality.  You can access the survey here.

Friday, April 17

Spring finally feels as though it is arriving, and while the countdown to the end of the year has begun, the energy across our campus suggests we are far from slowing down. These final weeks are always a mix of “hellos” and “goodbyes” as we host exchange students, dances, and art shows while simultaneously preparing for the bittersweet departures that June brings.

This week, the spirit of service was front and center. We began with speeches from our five exceptional School Captain candidates, each offering thoughtful reflections on leadership, community, and the meaning of serving others. The sheer number of students stepping forward willing to serve this community is a powerful testament to their engagement and commitment to Havergal.

From the high-energy House Shout theme reveal to our Chinese Language Day celebrations, where we welcomed the Chinese Consul General, our days have been incredibly full. It’s a privilege to watch our students work so hard to make this school a better place for everyone.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Deirdre

Friday, April 10

This week, the halls of Havergal were particularly vibrant as we celebrated our annual “Arts Week.” We opened the festivities with a beautiful Prayers featuring music, dance, and visual art, where our students shared movingly about how the arts contribute to their purpose, sense of self, and wellbeing. Our annual Art Salon was another highlight, showcasing the diverse talents of both students and staff and bringing our community together in a shared experience of beauty.

On Thursday, we were honored to welcome back alumna Nicole Leung ’15. Now a professional opera singer, Nicole moved us not only with her extraordinary gift of song but also with a hopeful message on how pursuing our unique talents—even in the face of obstacles—leads to true fulfillment.

We are profoundly grateful for the creativity that breathes life into our school every day, and for the students, faculty, and staff who make it all come alive.

I hope you have a lovely weekend,

Krista

Thursday, April 2, 2026

Over the past two weeks, our Grade 9 students stepped outside the traditional classroom for TC-9, an interdisciplinary journey designed to help them see themselves as changemakers. Grounded in Havergal’s mission, the program challenged students to examine global issues and ask, “How can I make a difference?”

Students chose a focus area connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. They explored complex issues through various lenses, including:

  • Sustainability: Climate Action, circular design, and urban farming.
  • Community & Wellbeing: Social justice through art, urban planning, and the importance of play.

The program wasn’t just theoretical. Students met with local leaders and took full-day excursions across the city to see how big ideas translate into local action. To help them process these experiences, we introduced several problem-solving frameworks:

  • Systems & Futures Thinking: Learning to see the big picture and imagining the long-term impact of today’s choices.
  • Design Thinking: A hands-on approach to creating solutions that actually work for people.

By the end of the program, students weren’t just thinking about problems; they were shaping personal action plans. We saw a wonderful shift in the girls as they developed greater agency and optimism. They are walking away not just with new knowledge, but with the confidence that they have the tools to contribute to a better world.

We truly appreciated the opportunity to work with your smart, curious, and talented daughters!Jeff Adams, Allison Campbell-Rogers and Adam Caplan, The HC-X Team

Friday, March 27, 2026

Dear Upper School Families,

It was so lovely to welcome our students back to school on Tuesday after the March Break! I love days back after extended breaks – students are so excited to see each other and their teachers. There is always a buzz that makes me know what a great community we have.

On Monday of this past week, our faculty and staff welcomed educational consultant Eric Hudson to campus for a professional development day on the future of generative AI in education. Eric guided us through AI skills and tools in the morning session, with a deep dive in the afternoon focused on assessment strategies and the future of writing.  Through hands-on learning, practical examples, and Q&A, Eric discussed what it means to be human in an AI world, emphasized the importance of thoughtful integration, and shared three AI skills for educators and students: literacy, learning, and ethics. We are excited to bring these insights to our work and classrooms. Eric highlighted the importance of seeking student feedback as we proceed, and that is certainly at the forefront as we consider next steps.

To our families celebrating Passover next week, we hope it is a lovely time with family and friends.

Warmly,

Krista

Empowering Excellence is our roadmap to make this a reality. Guiding our work and illustrating our commitment, three pillars are central to our plan: Connection, Wellbeing & Belonging, Future-Ready and Transforming Tomorrow.

This year’s progress update builds on the momentum realized in year one, moving from planning to action. It highlights the opportunities, resources and support that allow every Havergal student to realize their full potential. Thank you for embarking on this journey with us; your dedication is the driving force behind our progress! We look forward to continuing our work and shaping future difference-makers.

We wish you and your family a lovely, restorative March Break.

Dr. Katrina Samson

Introducing the Havergal Tennis Club

As part of our commitment to promoting wellbeing, community engagement and the spirit of sport, we are pleased to announce the launch of the Havergal Tennis Club this spring, welcoming both the Havergal community and broader public to our campus. Utilizing our newly refurbished tennis courts, the Havergal Tennis Club will be membership-based, operating exclusively for members from April to October, seven days a week (outside of school hours).

Havergal families are welcome to purchase memberships by visiting our facility rentals website; sign up, view membership details, and learn more. Whether you are a competitive player or looking to pick up a racquet for the first time, we hope to see you on the court!

Immunization Day

On Friday, March 27, Toronto Public Health will host their second Grade 7 immunization clinic. Students who were absent for the first inoculation in September may receive it now. Please mark your calendars.

Morning Program: The First Week Back

On Wednesday, our Middle School students will be engaging with our Win@Social program. During this session, students will consider how social media influencers or role models shape how we think, act, and see the world. The key challenge for young people is learning to think carefully about whose voices they listen to and choosing influences that support their goals and aspirations.

Morning Programming: The First Week Back

The first week back from break is short, with Prayers on both Tuesday and Thursday.

On Wednesday, our Grade 10 students will be running the TA session with their advisory group. This is a wonderful opportunity for these students to practice their leadership skills.
