Friday, January 30, 2026

On Tuesday, January 27th, the Upper School observed International Holocaust Remembrance Day together in Prayers.  We had the honour of having Dr. Carol Lipszyc share the story of her mother’s survival during the years of the Holocaust in Lublin, Poland. Dr. Lipszyc shared footage of her interviewing her mother, telling the story of her escape. She then shared some poetry she wrote based on her mother’s stories.  Our Senior Vocal class gave a powerful performance of Ani Ma’amim, a song that has come to represent resistance in the Jewish culture. To learn more about Dr. Lipszyc and her work, visit the organization, Carrying Testimony from Generation to Generation.

Yesterday, our Grade 11 class stepped away from their daily routines to focus on the essential work of self-discovery and collective leadership. The day was intentionally designed to help each student find their unique voice, exploring the core values that define who they are and how they are meant to lead. Guest speaker Jules Porter provided a powerful spark for this journey, challenging the students to listen to their inner gut feelings and find the courage to live authentically in the world. This was complemented by Ms. Russell, our Director of Student Leadership, who encouraged the cohort to align those personal values with their passions to create a meaningful impact in the communities they care about. Through the guidance of our incredible Havergal facilitators, the Class of 2027 didn’t just grow as individuals—they bonded as a unified group. We left the retreat incredibly proud of their insight and energy, and we are eager to see the leadership and spirit they will continue to bring to the Havergal community.

We are looking forward to shaking off the cold weather with our Spirit Week activities in a few weeks. Be sure to check your cupboards for Green and Gold accessories and get ready for our beloved Hockey Day.

Go Gators!

Form Programming Next Week

Next week in Form programming, students will explore their personal values, their role within different communities, and how they can support others. They will revisit the Community Agreements each grade created in the Fall and reflect on how they are upholding these commitments. This work not only supports students in setting values-based goals but also deepens their understanding of how they contribute to and care for their community.

Our Grade 8 assemblies are back with Form 8E and 8F presenting on Kindness and how to spread joy and do nice things for people in your community.

Grade 7 Science of Learning and Wellbeing Course – January 2026: Parent Overview

Grade 7 students are approximately halfway through the Science of Learning and Wellbeing mini-course. Our work has been centered around the question: “How does the brain support our learning and social-emotional wellbeing?” and emphasizes that Middle School is about learning how to learn, building self-awareness, and establishing positive learning habits.

Students examined how the brain learns through building and strengthening neural networks, highlighting the importance of practice for skill building. We emphasized that effortful practice (flashcards/quizzes) and spaced repetition (shorter, frequent sessions) are far more effective than re-reading or “cramming.” Students also explored emotion regulation and how to manage the “fast” emotional reactions of the amygdala using the “logical” prefrontal cortex.

To support your daughter’s ongoing self-reflection in this course, we invite you to use these discussion questions for conversations at home.

  • Ask your daughter what she has learned thus far in the course.
  • What has been a highlight of the course so far? Do you have a “fun fact” you can share with us?
  • What have you learned about how the brain makes neural connections? How does it apply to them as a learner?
  • Based on what they have learned, do they think they have effective study strategies? Is there a strategy that they learned that they might try? What is it? What course would they use it for?

Friday, January 23, 2026

Dear Families,

It was a true pleasure to see so many of you in the Brenda Robson Hall this past Wednesday for our Academic & Course Planning Evening. It was nice to come together as a community, in person, to talk about the journey of your daughters’ education.

Our goal for the evening was to discuss the “why” behind our academic program. Whether it was our Dean of Academics, Lam Nguyen, discussing the importance of intentionality over volume in academic choices, or our Deputy Principal, Lindsay Norberg, highlighting the transformative power of our Global Experiences and Microcredentials, the message was clear: we are here to help your daughters find a path that is as unique as they are.

We want our students to be future-ready—not just by collecting credits, but by fostering a deep curiosity and the agency to shape the world around them.

For those who were unable to join us or would like to revisit the information, you can find the slide decks and resources here:

Friday, January 16, 2026

Yesterday, the world gave us a rare and beautiful gift: a forced pause. As I watched the snow cover our cars, our streets (and our driveways!), I was struck by how quickly the pace of life shifted.

Spending the day at home with my family was an unexpected joy, and it was wonderful to see neighbours stepping out to help one another. I kept thinking about our students and what a magical gift this day was for them. Whether they spent it playing in the snow, catching up on a bit of homework without the usual rush, or simply snuggling up to rest and reset, I hope they feel refreshed. For our students, who work so hard, these moments to breathe and be present are essential.

I’m grateful we all had the chance to slow down together.

Have a great weekend,

Deirdre

Friday, January 9

Welcome Back!

On January 5, we welcomed all faculty back to school for a full day of professional learning focused on strengthening how we work together and on designing learning environments that help students thrive. It was an energizing and highly engaging day.

The day began with the faculty revisiting the Strength Deployment Inventory (SDI), a tool we have used with employees and our Grade 12 students. This work deepens self-awareness and strengthens relationships across divisions—an essential foundation for strong teaching and learning and our commitment to wellbeing.

A central focus of the day was rethinking perfectionism. Faculty explored the difference between healthy striving—where high expectations are balanced with flexibility, reflection, and care—and unhelpful perfectionism, which can limit learning and wellbeing. Teachers reflected on how adult beliefs and behaviours shape classroom culture, influence student confidence, and either encourage or inhibit risk-taking and resilience.

In the afternoon, faculty engaged in hands-on learning on classroom risk-taking. Through shared activities and discussion, teachers examined instructional choices that invite students to think deeply, make mistakes safely, and persist through challenge. This work reinforces our commitment to learning environments where curiosity, creativity, and growth are valued as much as outcomes, which we know lead to student success.

Across the day, faculty were united by a shared goal: excellence grounded in healthy striving, strong relationships, and a deep commitment to student wellbeing. This professional learning directly informs our teaching practice and supports our ongoing work to ensure every Havergal student feels confident, challenged, and supported as a learner.

We hope you and your family had a lovely December break together, and we look forward to continuing our partnership to support your child in 2026.

Re-registration, which includes both completing the online forms and submitting the deposit, is due on Monday, February 2, 2026.  We cannot guarantee a place for students who re-register after this date.  While we are certainly hoping to welcome all of our students back next year, we recognize that family situations change and relocations occur.  If you are aware that your daughter is not returning to Havergal, please let us know by emailing Maggie Houston-White as soon as possible so we can ensure we have a fulsome admission process at all necessary years.

Leading by Example: Morning Programming Attendance

Our morning programming (Prayers, Grade Programming, House Time and Form & TA group meetings) is a crucial time for building community, receiving vital school announcements, and developing social-emotional, EDIB and leadership skills. It is also a time when students receive crucial academic guidance from their counsellors. We truly need your parental support and partnership to ensure your daughter arrives on time and can fully benefit from this important start to her day. Consistent attendance at these community events demonstrates the foundational skills required for effective leadership.

We also want to make you aware of an important guideline: If a student misses more than 20% of our morning program sessions (i.e., attends less than 80%), they will become ineligible to run for any leadership positions, including formal council roles and club leadership. This is because we believe that our morning programming sessions are:

  • The primary spaces for intentional community-building activities and addressing school-wide issues. As a leader, students must demonstrate their commitment to fully participating in the community they wish to lead, and the first step is simply showing up.
  • A space for students to learn leadership skills such as running meetings, organizing events, and mentoring others.
  • A place for students to set an example, especially in terms of consistent attendance. We expect our leaders to model the behaviour that we want the rest of the student body to follow.

If you wish to discuss this further, please reach out to Deirdre Timusk (SS) or Cissy Goodridge (MS).

Thursday, December 18

It has been a full and rewarding term in the Upper School. Throughout these past months, your daughters have shared their many talents, embraced their curiosity as learners, deepened their friendships, and navigated challenges with resilience. We are immensely proud of them.

We also extend our sincere gratitude to our dedicated faculty and staff for their tireless support, and to you—our parents—whose partnership and trust are the foundation of this community.

As we head into the break, our hope is that the coming weeks allow you and your daughters the space to settle into the things that truly rest and energize you: quiet time together, the pages of a good book, a walk in nature, the simple luxury of a long winter’s nap.

We look forward to all the promise that 2026 holds.

Wishing you love and light this holiday season,

Krista, Deirdre, Cissy, and Nicole

Partnership between Havergal and parents is key to student success. We encourage you to take time to review the report card, discuss it with your child, and identify any key themes or questions you might have. If you have any questions about specific courses, please reach out directly to the teacher; they are eager to partner with you.Further information on how to access the report cards will be emailed next week. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Lam Nguyen, Dean of Academics.

Haver-Honey

We are delighted to share that jars of Haver-Honey, produced from our very own school beehive in partnership with Alvéole, are now available for purchase.

Having a hive on campus offers students a unique, hands-on opportunity to learn about environmental stewardship, biodiversity, and the essential role that bees play in sustaining healthy ecosystems. Our beehive serves as a living classroom—helping students understand pollination, food systems, sustainability, and the interconnectedness of our natural world.

By purchasing Haver-Honey, you are directly supporting:

  • Environmental education and experiential learning opportunities for students
  • Increased biodiversity on our campus through pollination
  • Awareness of sustainable practices and the importance of protecting pollinators

Your support helps us continue this meaningful work while bringing home a delicious, locally produced honey—crafted by our very own bees.If you would like to order a jar, please complete this form by Tuesday December 16, 2025. Feel free to reach out to Fatima Kaba for more information.

Next Week In Morning Programming

As the school year winds down, our Morning Programming this week is dedicated to celebrating the strong sense of community within our beloved House System and preparing students for the New Year. We have a mix of festive fun and meaningful development planned, including spirited Holiday Lip Syncs and an energetic House Dance Competition. Beyond the celebrations, we are incorporating crucial sessions such as University Application Reminders for our older students and dedicated time for setting personal intentions for the New Year, fostering reflection and goal-setting. Importantly, these community-building activities are intentionally designed to create leadership opportunities for many of our students. Whether leading a dance team, coordinating a lip sync group, or facilitating a discussion on New Year’s intentions, these events empower students to step up, develop organizational skills, and actively contribute to the positive spirit that we all pride ourselves on at Havergal.

Friday, November 28

November came to a close this week with the spectacular Middle School play. It was so great to see how talented our students are and how much fun they had working together on this production. The final performance is tonight at 7 pm. It’s not too late to join us!

With December around the corner, the urge to “hustle” often creeps in, and students can get worn down. However, our Head of Upper School, Krista Koekkoek, reminded us this week that self-compassion is the key to resilience, noting that “when we treat ourselves with warmth… we can be more hopeful.”

To practice self-compassion and protect our peace during this busy season, let’s get back to basics:

  • Eat Breakfast: We need energy to learn, and fueling up is the best way to start the day!
  • Prioritize Sleep: Please help your child prioritize rest. If you see that this is not possible because of academic load, please reach out to your child’s guidance counsellor for a more extended discussion.
  • Stay Home When Sick: Pushing through illness doesn’t help anyone. Please take the time to recover fully before returning to school.

Wishing you all a restful weekend and a joyful start to the holiday season.

Deirdre

Announcing a New Microcredential in Futures & Foresight from HC-X

Interested in Business, Entrepreneurship, Design or Innovation? The Futures & Foresight Microcredential is a new learning opportunity designed in partnership with OCAD for students in Grades 10–12.

This microcredential introduces students to the field of futures thinking, which helps people make sense of rapid change, imagine what might be possible, and plan for the future with confidence and creativity. Emerging research highlights that cultivating futures literacy—the ability to understand and work with change—improves student wellbeing by building optimism, resilience, and a stronger sense of control over what comes next.

To ground these ideas in experience, students will take part in several industry-facilitated sessions—both onsite at Havergal and offsite at OCAD University.

The dates are:

  • Thursday, January 29, 2026 (afternoon, on campus)
  • Monday, March 2Wednesday, March 4, 2026 (full days, offsite – OCADU)
  • Friday, April 17th, 2026 (afternoon, on campus)
  • Monday, April 20th, 2026 (after school, on campus)

Guided by leading industry experts, students in this microcredential will:

  • Learn how futurists use foresight tools, trends, and scenarios to understand how the world is changing.
  • Understand how foresight is used in business, innovation, and entrepreneurship to spot opportunities and make strategic decisions.
  • Collaborate with peers to design ideas and pathways toward preferred futures.
  • Develop curiosity, creative confidence, and resilience, key skills for navigating uncertainty.
  • Build problem-solving and adaptive thinking skills that are valuable in any field.

Interested students should submit their application by Monday, December 15th, to be considered. Space is limited! There is no additional cost for this program.

Imagine what’s possible. Explore what’s changing. Shape what’s next.

Next Week in Grade Programming

Grade 9: Students will revisit their conversations that began with Jake Ernst’s visit last week to continue discussing their online presence and its impact.

Grade 10: This session introduces students to what it means to be an ally and explores the actions, attitudes, and language that help create more inclusive and supportive communities.

Grade 11: Our Director of Student Leadership will lead this leadership session, and students will learn how to handle setbacks when things don’t go as planned.

Grade 12: Students will learn more about the Havergal Connections platform, which connects them with alumni eager to help our students navigate life after Havergal. They will learn how to reach out and why these connections are so important for their future.

Friday, November 21

In 1894, Ellen Knox asked the Havergal students: “What are you going to do?” This past week, we discussed this question in our Middle School council meeting. At this time of year, when we are called upon to give, our goal is to help our students explore the world of philanthropy and service.

During this holiday season, we are asking our students to contribute to three deserving programs. We Scare Hunger and the Winter Clothing Drive invite you to take a moment to look through your cupboards or closets. This simple act costs nothing, just a few minutes of your time. The Holiday Angels program requires a donation of your time and money. This decades long tradition supports 12 families who are new to Canada, often relocating from a difficult situation.

This past week, our student leaders shared the stories of each of these families with their peers. In Middle School, the girls did the math and realized that a donation of 10 or 20 dollars would cover every request on our families list. The girls committed to act, to remind each other to bring in a gently used item and to create a Form challenge of $500 in gift cards from Best Buy or No Frills. Our hope is that our entire community will get behind these initiatives and commit to an action that will make a difference in the lives of others.

With gratitude,

Cissy

New Science of Learning & Wellbeing Course

Two years ago, we welcomed Dr. Lisa Damour, a renowned clinical psychologist and New York Times bestselling author specializing in adolescent development, to spend time with our students, faculty, and parents.

When we asked Dr. Damour how we could best support our students’ growth in an increasingly complex world, her advice was clear: create a dedicated course that helps students understand their brains, their emotions, and how to navigate the sensitive challenges unique to teenage girls.

This insight led to the development of our new, Havergal-developed course: The Science of Learning & Wellbeing.

Launching in January, all Grade 7 students will participate in this 10-lesson program. It will be co-taught by a cross-functional team of our experts, including Guidance Counsellors, Learning Support Specialists, our Social Worker, and the Chaplain.

The primary goal is simple: to give students the knowledge to become active agents of their own learning and emotional health. Students will explore core concepts in neuroscience, psychology, and education—all tailored to be age-appropriate and immediately applicable.

They will develop a deeper, scientific understanding of:

  • How their brains process information and learn most effectively.
  • The connection between stress, attention, and focus.
  • The best strategies for taking care of their mental and social-emotional wellbeing.

By understanding the science, we aim to empower every student with the essential knowledge and skills needed to flourish both inside and outside the classroom.

A Note for Grade 7 Parents: Stay tuned! We will provide you with a learning guide early next year so you can engage in meaningful conversations with your daughters about their new insights. Please contact Director of Guidance (7-9), Kirsten Uhre, if you have questions about the course.

Support the Havergal Fund

Starting in 2026, families will be invited to support the Havergal Fund during registration and re-registration, making it simpler than ever to participate. Every gift plays a vital role in enriching programs, supporting faculty excellence, and creating opportunities for our students to grow, thrive, and reach their potential. When families make Havergal one of their top philanthropic priorities, our girls feel the impact of that support in their everyday experience.

If you haven’t made your 2025 gift to the annual fund, you can do so now by clicking here. Gifts made before the end of the year may provide tax advantages while having an immediate impact.

Friday, November 14

It was another eventful week in the Upper School, showcasing the vibrant scope of our students’ interests. We saw over 250 participants in a Classics Tournament, the Brenda Robson Hall buzzing with our HC-X department’s futures and foresight research, and the gym filled with support for our fall athletes in the Athletic Assembly. These moments, while seemingly routine, offered me a moment to step back and reflect on the depth and breadth of experiences our community engages in. It is in this varied engagement that our strength truly lies.

That same powerful spirit will continue next week as we intentionally celebrate the diversity that makes us an even stronger community. Students will lead our Tuesday Prayers and explore the critical concept of intersectionality. This shared moment, which recognizes how our unique identities overlap and enrich us, already gives me goosebumps. It is the type of ‘routine’ moment that will continue to foster the profound sense of belonging we value.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our community each week, your trust in us, and for your fabulous, curious, driven daughters. They make us better every day.

Have a great weekend,

Krista
