Friday, May 1

This week at Havergal, our community connected through a vibrant mix of celebration, leadership, and global excellence. In Prayers this week, we were grounded in diverse perspectives, honouring Indigenous Entrepreneurship, with guest speaker Chelsee Petitt, and Asian Heritage Month. Chelsea reminded us of the power of dreaming big and the necessity of pivoting in business to remain relevant. Our students shared the profound cultural impact of music in their presentation of various Asian musicians.

The torch of leadership is also beginning its transition. We were thrilled to introduce Sabrina as our next School Captain; her warm reception reflects the school’s confidence in her ability to model our school values. As we look ahead, we remain deeply grateful to Naomi and her team for their ongoing dedication to our community.

Our students’ talents and engagement reached new heights—both on stage and on the world stage:

  • The Grade 12 Drama class captivated us with their exam performance of Maya’s original one-act play.
  • Our DECA team returned from Atlanta with eight awards, including three students ranking in the Top 10 globally.
  • We capped off the week with an incredible Relay for Life, raising over $250,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
  • We celebrated all of our students who participated in exchanges this year over lunch, sharing all that they had gleaned from their experiences worldwide.

Whether they were raising money for local causes or competing internationally, our students showed us what it means to lead with both passion and perspective.

We hope you have a great weekend,

Krista, Cissy & Deirdre

Announcing Our New Board Chair

We are pleased to announce that Kate Horton ‘94 will be appointed as the new Chair of the Board of Governors this September. An alumna and current parent, Kate is the President and CEO of Ronald McDonald House Canada. Her extensive experience in strategic leadership and her deep connection to the school will be invaluable as she guides Havergal’s long-term vision and sustainability.

We also share our deepest gratitude for outgoing Chair Jill Fraser ‘87. During her tenure, Jill was instrumental in launching the Empowering Excellence strategic plan, laying the groundwork for a substantial expansion of our outdoor athletic and play facilities, including a new Junior School playscape, refurbished tennis courts, lower pitch revitalization and preparations for a new turf field and seasonal dome. Her dedication to advancing girls’ education and athletics has left a lasting impact on our community. To ensure a seamless leadership transition and maintain governance continuity, Jill will serve as Past Chair for the coming year, providing strategic support to Kate in her new role.As we look toward the fall, we are excited to build on this momentum. Kate will officially assume her role following the Annual General Meeting on September 21, and you can look forward to her first formal community message in the October edition of Inside Havergal.

In MS Morning Programming this Week:

This Monday, May 4, Forms 8I and 8J will host our final Grade 8 assembly of the year. The theme is “May the 4th Be With You”, a fitting choice for the date! Throughout this year, we have been truly impressed by the tremendous growth in our students. It has been a pleasure to witness their increasing confidence and the poise they now demonstrate when speaking to their peers.

Food Drive

Our Middle School students are currently spearheading a food drive for the North York Harvest Food Bank. Spring is a critical time of year when food bank supplies are often at their lowest.

From Monday, April 27 to Monday, May 25, we are challenging every MS student to contribute to this vital cause. Our goal is to collect 1,000 items, and we need your help to get there! When you are grocery shopping, please pick up a few extra essentials such as pasta, sauce, and canned meat. Every donation brings us closer to our goal and supports our local community.

Relay For Life, Thank you!

On Thursday, April 30, 46 of our Middle School students participated in the COSSOT Relay For Life. Thanks to your incredible support, our students raised a total of $8,508.60 for this vital cause. Bundled up against the cold, they walked for hours to raise awareness and support the hope that we will one day eradicate cancer for good.

In SS Morning Programming this Week:

On Monday

  • Grade 9s will be participating in an activity designed by their student grade representatives.
  • Grade 10s will look at the topic of “Friendship & Allyship”
  • Grade 11s will have a rehearsal for the songs they will be asked to memorize for our Candlelight Ceremony, which will take place in just a few short weeks.
  • Grade 12s will learn important information about the graduation ceremony and what they need to do to prepare for this important day.

On Wednesday

  • This week, House Shout practices will continue. It is important that students are there to learn the words and the routine with their peers. House Shout will take place on Wednesday, May 13.
