Dear Parents and Students

Last Thursday’s snow day brought plenty of challenges with travel, and we hope everyone is managing to dig out from the snow!

This week we wrapped up our Grade Cheers in a rip-roaring assembly filled with energy and school spirit! Meanwhile, our bands have continued competing at the OBA, demonstrating their dedication and talent.

Next week we will come together to acknowledge and discuss bullying through various initiatives. Shreya G., a Senior School student and recent recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, will share insights from her book Flamingo Feet. Additionally, our Grade 12 students will lead small-group discussions with Middle School students as part of a bullying awareness program co-designed by our well-being team and student leaders. Spring Athletics Registration: Opens Thursday, February 27 until Friday, March 7, 12 pm

Below are some important reminders to help you with this season’s registration. 

  • Parents may register by visiting the Parent Portal. Currently there is an athletics catalogue that displays spring sports. The link to register will be updated on Feb. 27th. 
  • ONLY PARENTS may complete registration – This registration allows parents to log on and provide permission via an eAAR approval process for the teams that your Upper School child(ren) would like to try out for.
  • Spring Tryout Schedule – The tryout schedule is below and can be found on Veracross. The season schedule will be finalized on April 9, 2025. When you click on the link below, make sure you are looking at the third tab – “SPRING 2025”. 

Spring 2024 -2025 Schedule 

  • Students may only register to try out for TWO teams (this does not include Coach Mentor, OFSAA Badminton, Learn to Golf or Triathlon) – please consult with your child/children to confirm the two teams that they would like to try out for before you complete the online registration.
  • Please note there is no reminder email of when specific tryouts take place. It is the responsibility of the students and parents to look at the schedule to know when and where the tryouts are occurring.

Extended Absence Reminder

If your daughter will be absent for three or more days, please contact the Head of Middle School or Head of Senior School for approval. They will initiate the support process to help manage the extended absence.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

In Form This Week

We have been busy in Middle School. This past week during Form programming, the students studied Black History Month. They had the opportunity to research various young leaders who are making a difference in the world and then chose one leader to present to their peers.

Additionally, as we began our 1000 can food drive, the timing was ideal for the students to learn about food insecurity and how members of our community are affected by it. We are excited at the prospect of reaching our goal and over the next two weeks, look forward to students bringing in 4 cans of food along with a bag of pasta.

Pink Shirt Day: Wednesday, February 26

On Wednesday February 26, the MS will honour Pink Shirt Day and students are encouraged to wear a pink shirt with their uniform. Our morning program will be led by our Grade 12 students who will work with our Grade 7 and 8’s, in small groups, in an anti bullying activity.  Working with our Senior Students is one of their favourite activities.

SENIOR SCHOOL

In Grade Programming This Week

On Tuesday, February 25, as part of our leadership program, students in Grade 9-11 will learn more about different opportunities where they can lean into leadership at the next grade level.  Our Grade 12 students will participate in a session with the Health Centre focused on making informed and responsible decisions about health and well-being.

On Wednesday, February 26, all students are encouraged to wear pink shirts with their uniforms for Pink Shirt Day. 

During the morning program, Grade 12 students will lead anti-bullying activities with Grades 7-8 in small groups. 

Our Grade 9 and 10 students will be participating in the Waterloo mathematics contest the morning of Wednesday, February 28. All Grade 9 and 10 students should arrive no later than 8:15 am in order to start the test at 8:30 am. It is a great challenge for our students and many win awards they can talk about later on their university applications!

Grade 11 students will be having their health related questions answered by some of our amazing alumni volunteers!

RSGC Travel Fair: Saturday, February 22

Grade 9-12 students interested in travel summer courses, working abroad or a gap year opportunity are welcome to attend RSGC Travel Fair this Saturday, February 22 at Royal St. George’s College from 11:00am – 2:00pm. Dear Parents & Students,

We’re writing from home, enjoying our winter wonderland! A snow day is always a welcome surprise—an unexpected pause to cozy up and take a well-deserved break.

While today’s snowfall may have postponed the final day of Spirit Week, there’s no need to worry—our much-anticipated Grade Cheer will now take place next Thursday!

This week, we also came together as a community to cheer on our Varsity Hockey Team at Hockey Day. The energy was electric, and the game was a true nail-biter, ending in a dramatic shootout with a 3-2 score.

A huge congratulations to our senior Band students for their outstanding performances at the Ontario Band Association Festival! Our Symphonic Band earned Gold, while Concert Winds brought home a SilverPlus award. They represented Havergal beautifully, and we can’t wait to hear them again at our Spring Music Night in April.

The Bake Sale moved to Tuesday, February 18

US Bake Sale

The US Bake Sale has been rescheduled to next Tuesday, February 18 at the EK library! All Upper School students will have an opportunity to attend our delicious annual bake sale during the day. US students are welcome to use cash or card/ApplePay to make purchases.

If you signed up for donations please drop your delicious baked items to EK library on Tuesday morning between 7.30-8.30am.If you had signed up to volunteer but no longer can please contact hcpa.committee@gmail.com.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

This Week in Form programming

  • The MS Canned Food and Pasta Drive kicks off on Tuesday Feb 18th. In support of our North York Harvest Food Bank, we’ve set a goal of 1000 cans. In order to achieve this, we are asking all MS students to bring in 4 cans of food and bagged or boxed pasta. The list of much needed foods can be found here: Soups, Pasta Sauce, Chilli, Stews and Pasta.
  • As we kick off the food drive, our students will be learning about food insecurity and debunking the myths of who accesses these vital services in our city.
  • During our win@social segment, this week the students will focus on Black History Month where they will learn about impactful students and leaders who are making a difference in the world around them.

SENIOR SCHOOL

In Grade Programming This Week

Our Grade 11 and 12 students will attend a session by Lexi Koster, a Toronto-based Sexual Violence Prevention Educator, Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist & Child Life Specialist. She will discuss topics like consent, bodily autonomy and bystander intervention. Lexi’s talk will encourage our students to talk openly about sexual violence and take action toward its prevention. Having formerly worked as Queen’s University’s Sexual Violence Prevention Educator, Lexi knows the difference it makes to have these important conversations before stepping foot on campus. As part of our commitment to student well-being, Grade 10s will discuss safe decision-making in social settings, including healthy relationships and responsible choices at parties.

OSSLT Results: Havergal Earns 100% Pass Rate

All students who wrote the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test in November 2024 passed! Individual student reports from the Education and Accountability Office (EQAO) have now been uploaded to the Veracross Parent Portal. To access your child’s report:

  • In the upper left, select My Children, then select Student Files under the child you wish you view.
  • In the Files section, select Download next to the file you wish to view

University Visit: Huron University College –  Wednesday, February 26 at lunch

We encourage students to come and learn more about Huron University College which is a university college affiliated with the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. Huron is the founding institution of the University of Western Ontario and students can have a small school experience while accessing the resources of the larger university.

A Message from the Heads: Cissy Goodridge & Deirdre Timusk

Dear Parents and Students

Our school’s spirit has been on full display this week, beginning with an inspiring Black Cultural Prayers celebration. Students lit up the space with a colorful fashion show, filled the air with uplifting music, and shared rich traditions from their Caribbean and African heritage. We’re grateful to all the students who opened themselves to share these meaningful family traditions with our community.

The Grade 11 Leadership Retreat, helped students step into their roles as leaders by embracing their authentic selves while fostering belonging, wellbeing, and community. This experience laid the foundation for a strong and connected graduating class, setting the stage for a meaningful final year. Their day was highlighted by an inspiring talk from Monika Myers, a 16 year old model with Down Syndrome, whose empowering message left a lasting impression on our students.

Looking ahead, we’re about to enter one of our most hi-energy times of the year! Spirit Week and Hockey Day are beloved traditions that showcase the heart of our community. For our new families, we encourage you to preview last year’s game footage linked here to experience the magic that makes these events so special.

Thank you to all our families who participated in parent-teacher conferences this week. These conversations are invaluable in supporting your child’s journey, and we appreciate your partnership. From joining us at Prayers to supporting school events, your presence makes our community stronger, and we hope to see many familiar faces cheering in the stands at next week’s hockey game.

Date Change: Founders’ Day Tuesday, April 22

Please note that our Founders’ Day Service for the Havergal student community will take place at St. Paul’s on Tuesday, April 22 instead of Thursday, April 24 as originally planned.  Students will be expected to arrive at St. Paul’s that morning on their own and will be bused back to Havergal after the service. This year we have secured Daniella Ponticelli who is one of the PWHL’s play by play commentators who will be joined by Darren Dupont who has called hockey, football and other sports across Canada. Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey: July 7 – 10

Havergal College in partnership with Leaders of the Day is offering our Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey excursion to Algonquin Park. This is available to students in Grades 8-12 (must be a minimum age of 14 or within 6 months of turning 14) who are currently registered or interested in registering for the Duke of Edinburgh Award program. This excursion will run from July 7-10 and will satisfy the Bronze Award Requirement. A video recording detailing the excursion and what it entails can be found HERE. Our MS Spirit Reps have been hard at work, creating engaging grade cheers for our MS students. Spirit Week preparations are well underway and our Reps are charged with encouraging their grades to bring their middle school  spirit to each of the daily events. As the students said in our recent assembly: “you cannot be overdressed or overhyped.” Find your face-paint and clean out your closets for dress down days, #gethyped!

A Message from the Heads: Cissy Goodridge & Deirdre Timusk

Dear Parents & Students

This week, our community came together for meaningful moments of learning, remembrance, and celebration. We began with Holocaust Prayers, where students heard firsthand from Andy Reti, a Holocaust survivor who was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1942. Later in the week our Grade 10 class visited  the Holocaust Museum, deepening their understanding of history and empathy.

We then celebrated Lunar New Year with a beautiful Prayers assembly and reception. A special thank you to the students who trained for months as dragon dancers under the guidance of Ms. Lu and Ms. Lau—your dedication was truly inspiring. To the parents who joined us, your support helps foster an inclusive and engaged community.

As always, we welcome you to attend Prayers and be part of these special moments. Tonight, we look forward to the Grade 11/12 Semi, where our senior students will come together for a well-earned celebration.

Havergal Launches Centre for Learning Research

Havergal is excited to announce the launch of the Centre for Learning Research, an exciting initiative dedicated to fostering excellence in student learning, innovation and inquiry, with a particular focus on girls’ education. 

This transformative Centre will play a critical role in advancing the school’s learning and teaching priorities earmarked within our strategic plan, Empowering Excellence.

Leading this new initiative will be Dr. Seonaid Davis, currently the school’s Vice-Principal of Teaching & Learning. Dr. Davis will assume the role on July 1st and will play a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of the Centre, integrating research-driven practices into every aspect of student learning and faculty development.

Stay tuned for updates about the Centre’s progress and research activities in the coming months.

HOCKEY DAY! Tuesday, February 11 – Registration Information Reminders

On Tuesday, February 11, at approximately 12:45 pm, Havergal College will face the Bishop Strachan School (BSS) U20 Hockey team in a battle for the Hewitt Cup. This is affectionately known as HOCKEY DAY! In this annual game, faculty, staff, and students are decked out in green and gold to cheer on our Gators with pride. Our Junior School Gators hockey team will play the BSS Junior School team during the first intermission.

Like last year, this year’s game will be played at the Mattamy Athletic Centre (Formerly Maple Leaf Gardens) located at 50 Carlton St, Toronto. Attendance is mandatory for students in Grades 4 to 8; students in Grades 9 to 12 are encouraged to attend. The parents of all attendees must complete the online registration and purchase tickets in advance.

Transportation

  • Students in Grades 7 & 8 have mandatory bus transportation to and from Mattamy AC.
  • Students in Grades 9 – 12 may be dismissed directly from Mattamy AC after the game. 

Option 1: Return Transportation – Mandatory return on a bus back to HC. No dismissal from Mattamy.

Option 2: Dismissal from Mattamy – Student dismissed from the venue after the game. No bus spot returning to Havergal. 

Please speak to your child before completing registration. We cannot make changes after registration is complete, as we order buses according to these requests.

Registration is now open and will close on Monday, February 4 at 12 pm.

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held virtually on Thursday, February 6 at 3 – 8 pm and Friday, February 7 at 8 am – 4 pm.

  • The Pick-A-Time booking system will close on Wednesday, February 5 at noon.
  • After Pick-A-Time closes, the only way to book appointments is by emailing teachers directly; only they will be able to add to their schedules.

This past week in Form, our students began discussing the difference between justice and charity. This was an introduction to our upcoming month-long focus on food insecurity and the role that we can take to make a difference in the lives of others. We are pleased to share that all students who wrote the OSSLT in November passed the test. Each student’s record of achieving this graduation requirement will be uploaded shortly and available via the Portal.

Grad Gown Measurements: February 3 – 21

Starting February 3 – 21, Grade 12s will be getting measured for their Grad Gowns in the Guidance Office, Room B12. Students are not to wear shoes during the measurement to ensure the most accurate height.

In Grade Programming This Week

This week “The Challenge” for our Grade 9 students, known as TC-9 will be introduced. TC-9 focuses on the UN Sustainable Goals and will incorporate topics from Geography, Science, Math and include Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing. As part of our commitment to student well-being, Grade 10s will discuss safe decision-making in social settings, including healthy relationships and responsible choices at parties. Our Grade 11 students will take part in the popular Human Library where they will have a chance to meet with various members of our community and ask about different topics and experiences. Our Grads will be discussing the importance of networking and staying connected to the school. They’ll also be running “Tap for Treats” to achieve 100% participation in supporting their chosen grad gift, Ahead of the Game.

A Message from Dr. Katrina Samson 

Dear Havergal Community,

Happy 2025! The start of the new calendar year turns our attention forward to the excitement ahead. Just as our grads look toward June and the transition that will come with graduation, we look forward to welcoming new families and team members.

Today, I’m sharing the bittersweet news that Mr. Garth Nichols, Vice Principal, Experiential Education & Innovation, has been appointed as the next Head of School at Kingsway College School in Etobicoke. Mr. Nichols will assume his new role this summer, and while we will greatly miss his leadership and vision at Havergal, I know you will join me in congratulating him on this exciting next chapter in his career.

Mr. Nichols has had a wonderful impact during his time with us and his contributions to Havergal will leave a lasting legacy. He has been instrumental in advancing experiential and global education at the College, including his leadership in developing the Global Learning and Leading Diploma and his exceptional guidance of HC-X, our innovation hub. He has also been a steadfast advocate for Havergal’s work in Truth and Reconciliation, nurturing relationships with Indigenous educators who have partnered with our students and staff to support our continued learning, growth and action.

I am also pleased to share that, over the next year, our global education initiatives, the Forum for Change, and HC-X will report to Deputy Principal Ms. Lindsay Norberg. With her deep understanding of Havergal’s vision and mission, her previous work with our global experience program, and her years of dedicated leadership, Ms. Norberg is well-positioned to guide these important areas of our programming. I am confident that, under her stewardship, these teams will continue to thrive and advance their impactful work.

HOCKEY DAY! Tuesday, February 11, 2025 – Registration Information

On Tuesday, February 11, at approximately 12:45 pm, Havergal College will face the Bishop Strachan School (BSS) U20 Hockey team in a battle for the Hewitt Cup. Parking & BRH Seating at US Lunar New Year Prayers on Thursday, January 30

We are looking forward to Lunar New Year Prayers and Parent Reception on Thursday, January 30 from 8:40 am to 9:50 am in the Upper School. We are expecting a number of guests in Prayers and for a reception in the Temerty Commons following.

Seating will be reserved with signage for parents and guests at the back of the BRH. As well, we encourage you to arrive early as this event may impact parking availability. 

We wish you a prosperous Year of the Snake filled with health, happiness and good fortune.

Incident Near Havergal Today

We want to inform you about an incident near our school earlier today. Toronto Police Services were contacted when a community member acted aggressively toward students in the area. We can confirm that no Havergal students were involved or harmed. 

Our security team is aware of the individual and has taken precautions to ensure student safety. The person has since been apprehended by police.

As always, the safety and wellbeing of our students remain our top priority. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Keep It Moving: Pick-Up & Drop-Off Tips!

To help ensure a safe and efficient flow of traffic during school drop-off and pick-up times, we are asking all parents to follow these updated guidelines:

During Pick-Up:
As cars leave the driveway, please move your vehicle forward to fill in any gaps. This will help maximize space and keep the process moving smoothly for everyone.

During Drop-Off:
Parents are asked to pull all the way up the driveway before letting their child out of the car. Please avoid stopping as soon as you enter the driveway. Students should only be dropped off on the east curb, closest to the school building, to ensure their safety and keep traffic moving efficiently.

By working together and following these simple steps, we can make the drop-off and pick-up experience safer and easier for everyone. Thank you for your cooperation!!

Grade 11 Retreat Update on Thursday, February 6: Special Speaker Announcement

We are excited to inform you that Monika Myers, a dynamic 16-year-old speaker, will be joining us as the keynote speaker at the Grade 11 Retreat on Thursday, February 6. Monika’s session will challenge and inspire the students as they explore the theme, “We need YOU! The power of authenticity and letting go of what gets in the way.”

The retreat will offer a day of reflection, engaging discussions, and activities designed to support the students as they step into leadership roles within the school community. We look forward to a day that will help shape their journey as future graduates and leaders. Thank you for supporting this important event!

Leading with Compassion is the theme of the session designed by our student Grade Reps this week. Grade 10 students will get to know their advisors. Our Grade 11 students will be learning and practicing stress management techniques. 

Our Grads are attending Part 1 of an exciting new session called Ready, Set, Hire: Interview Prep, Resumes, and LinkedIn for Career Success designed by our HR specialists. They’ll be addressing the key topics including:

A Message from the Heads: Cissy Goodridge & Deirdre Timusk

Dear Parents,

This week in Prayers, we were treated to two meaningful presentations. On Monday, our Boarder Prayers showcased talented musicians and testimonials from our boarding students about life living with a roommate and living far from home. A highlight was an engaging video exploring the myths of boarding life. Our school community gained an inside look at what it looks like to live at Havergal College outside of school hours. 

On Thursday, we welcomed the education team from Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre on Holocaust Studies. The presenters gave a thought provoking presentation on the historical and contemporary perspectives of antisemitism.  It was an important and at times difficult presentation, learning that antisemitism in Toronto has increased by 65% since 2020. 

These assemblies reflect our commitment to both fostering an inclusive community and ensuring our students engage with important historical and contemporary issues. Through these experiences, our students gain a deeper understanding of different perspectives and develop greater empathy for others. We look forward to continuing to offer such meaningful opportunities for growth and understanding throughout the school year.

Prayers Updates: Educational Speakers Coming

Next week in Prayers on Thursday, January 23, we will be commemorating the National Day of Action Against Islamophobia (recognized nationally on January 29), by welcoming a guest educator from the Canadian Council of Muslim Women to talk about Islamophobia.  Our guest will talk about what Islamophobia is, common myths, stereotypes, gendered impacts, and how we can be allies in combating it. Grade 9-12 students interested in a deeper conversation with our speaker will also have the opportunity to sign up in advance for an optional session during the first period.

We understand these topics can be challenging. Our student support team will be available to assist students during and after these kinds of sessions. We appreciate your partnership in our ongoing commitment to educating against hate and continuing to nurture an inclusive, affirming school community.

Student Safety

Lawrence Park CI shared an incident that occurred this morning that involved one of their students being approached by an unknown male in a vehicle. The student did the right thing by ignoring the man, making their way to school, reporting it to a trusted adult and the school contacted the police.

We regularly reinforce safety protocols with students and are lucky to have an exceptional security team that works hard to keep our campus safe. We would like to remind everyone in our community to report any suspicious or unusual occurrences.

With the new year upon us, it’s a good time for the students to recommit to our values and community agreements. This week in our Form program the students will revisit the community agreements that they composed in September. They will be asked to consider how they have been living their values and what steps they will take to uphold these agreements for the remainder of the year.

Havergal’s Next Surgeon: February 6 & February 7

We are thrilled to announce an exciting partnership with St. Michael’s Hospital to provide students with a unique opportunity to explore the world of surgery. Havergal’s Next Surgeon, will offer an in-depth look at what it takes to become a surgeon, from academic preparation and internships to the realities of life in the field. Students will hear firsthand from surgeons specializing in various areas and participate in hands-on activities, including learning basic suturing techniques and CPR. This experience is designed to inspire and educate students about potential careers in healthcare while equipping them with valuable skills and insights.

This is a 2 day experience, Thursday, February 6 at 5:30 – 8:30 pm and Friday, February 7 (Timing TBD).

Havergal’s Next Futurist in Partnership with OCAD U CO

As part of Havergal’s Next Futurist, students will dive into the principles of Futures thinking, strategic foresight, and creative problem-solving through engaging, hands-on sessions. OCAD U CO is the Futures design studio of OCAD University. Grounded in a rigorous and disciplined process that integrates Futures thinking, systems thinking and design thinking. OCAD U CO brings an impressive team of seasoned faculty and accomplished alumni with extensive experience and industry insights to help students tackle the most pressing challenges.

This week the Grade 9 class will be reflecting on their course selections for Grade 10. Our Grade 10 and 11 students will attend a course fair where teachers from each subject area will be able to answer any specific questions. Our Grade 12 students will be attending a session on How to Navigate the Roommate Relationship: Tips and Strategies for First-Year Success.

Feminist Alliance and Youth Without Shelter Clothing Drive: January 13 – 31

The Feminist Alliance will be collecting essential items until Friday, January 31 such as Black hair care, body lotion, new sweatpants (all sizes), new twin-sized bed sheet sets, new twin-sized comforters, new bras (all sizes), new underwear (all sizes and types), and boxers (boxer briefs preferred). All donations are appreciated and may be left at our Resource Centre.

The Junior School Christmas Concert, and the Upper School Carol Service will now take place on Wednesday, December 10. As a reminder these are mandatory events for our students.

Parent Education Evening – Save the Date: Tuesday, February 18 at 7 pm in EK Library

Lexi Koster, a Toronto-based Sexual Violence Prevention Educator, Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist & Child Life Specialist will be here to present to our Grade 11 & 12 parents. Through uplifting workshops and keynotes, Lexi gives audiences the confidence to talk openly about sexual violence and take action toward its prevention. Parents are encouraged to join us on Tuesday, February 18 where Lexi will cover the landscape of campus sexual violence and impart strategies to continue the conversation at home. Grade 11 Students – Special Workshop: Thursday, February 6 at 8:30 am – 1:40 pm

All Grade 11 students will be engaging in a special workshop aimed at helping them learn more about themselves and others as they begin to think about their transition to their graduating year. The day of programming begins at 8:30 am and ends at 1:40 pm, corresponding with the shortened school day for Parent Teacher Interviews. Attendance is mandatory and required for any students interested in any form of leadership in Grade 12.

Dear Parents & Students,

The start of a new year brings opportunities for personal reflection and recommitment. This week, we began with Prayers, where our Chaplain encouraged students to take a moment to reflect on their accomplishments and take pride in how far they have come. Our Prayers Prefect shared a thoughtful reminder that perseverance matters more than perfection and urged students not to give up on their New Year’s resolutions. Finally, our School Captain inspired everyone to look ahead with excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead.

As we continue our journey together, this term promises to be filled with meaningful moments and growth.

Thank you for your continued support, and as always, we welcome your feedback and involvement as we work together to create a vibrant, inclusive environment for all our students.

Prayers Updates: Educational Speakers Coming

As part of our ongoing commitment to building community and inclusive spaces, we will be offering two learning opportunities for students in the coming weeks.

Next week in Prayers on Thursday, January 16, we welcome guests from the education team of Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre in a learning session about antisemitism: what it is, how it shows up today, and how we can be allies in combating it. Students interested in a deeper conversation with our speakers will also have the opportunity to sign up in advance for an optional session during the first period. With the rise in antisemitism in Toronto, this session is an important and timely part of our educational programming for our students.

On Thursday, January 23, to mark the National Day of Action Against Islamophobia, we’ll welcome educators from the Canadian Council of Muslim Women to talk about Islamophobia, including common myths, stereotypes, gendered impacts, and how we can be allies in combating it. Students interested in a deeper conversation with our speakers will also have the opportunity to sign up in advance for an optional session during the first period for Grades 9 -12.

We understand these topics can be challenging. Our student support team will be available to assist students during and after these sessions. We appreciate your partnership in our ongoing commitment to educating against hate and continuing to nurture an inclusive, affirming school community.

Re-registration: January 27 – February 2, 2025

Re-registration for the 2025/26 school year will open on Monday, January 27.  Families will receive an email from the Board of Governors on that day with a link to reregistration and can also access reregistration through the Parent Portal Landing Page. 

Re-registration is due on Monday, February 2 and we cannot guarantee a place for students who re-register after this date.  While we are certainly hoping to be welcoming all of our students back next year, we recognize that family situations change and relocations occur.  If you are aware that your daughter is not returning to Havergal, please let us know by emailing Maggie Houston-White as soon as possible so we can ensure we have a fulsome admission process at all necessary years.

Going Away for More than 3 School Days in the Upcoming Months?

Will your daughter miss more than three days of school in a row? If so please follow our extended absence procedure. Parents are required to contact their child’s Head of School to request an extended absence. Once the absence has been approved, the Head of School will inform the child of the next steps. This process is an important first step in supporting your child while she is away from school. Please do this well in advance to allow at least two weeks for the process.

Feminist Alliance and Youth Without Shelter Clothing Drive: January 13 – 31

Our Feminist Alliance is excited to support Youth Without Shelter, one of our community partnerships that provides emergency housing, support, and resources to homeless and at-risk youth.

From Monday, January 13 to Friday, January 31, the Feminist Alliance will be collecting essential items such as Black hair care, body lotion, new sweatpants (all sizes), new twin-sized bed sheet sets, new twin-sized comforters, new bras (all sizes), new underwear (all sizes and types), and boxers (boxer briefs preferred).

These contributions will directly benefit young individuals who face the challenges of homelessness, providing them with the care and necessities they deserve. By participating, your family can play a meaningful role in supporting vulnerable youth and fostering a stronger, more inclusive community.

Donations can be dropped off in the Resource Centre (C29).

Sterling Hall Social: Friday, January 17

Grade 7 and 8 students are invited to register their interest in attending the Sterling Hall Social, next Friday, January 17 from 7 – 9 pm. Students were sent a registration form earlier this week. Registration closes at 6 pm on Friday, January 11. Successful candidates will be notified on Monday, January 13.

Grade 7 Student Leadership: Tuesday, January 21

On Tuesday, January 21, our Grade 7 students will have the opportunity to run for the position of Form or Spirit Rep. Students are able to nominate themselves and must prepare a one minute speech for their classmates. The speeches and elections will be held on Tuesday, January 21 in their Form rooms. Interested students are encouraged to speak to their Form teachers to get their self nomination form, or they may download a copy of it HERE. Please speak to your child and encourage them to put their name forward.

Parent Education Evening – Save the Date: Tuesday, February 18 at 7 pm in EK Library

Sexual violence is a growing issue on post-secondary campuses, largely due to a lack of early education on topics like consent, bodily autonomy and bystander intervention. Through uplifting workshops and keynotes, Lexi gives audiences the confidence to talk openly about sexual violence and take action toward its prevention. Having formerly worked as Queen’s University’s Sexual Violence Prevention Educator, Lexi knows the difference it makes to have these important conversations before stepping foot on campus. Parents are encouraged to join us on February 18 where Lexi will cover the landscape of campus sexual violence and impart strategies to continue the conversation at home. Grade 11 and 12 students will also meet with Lexi on Tuesday, February 18 during Grade Programming.  Students will take part in interactive case studies and walk away with practical tools to keep themselves and others safe as they transition to post-secondary life. 

Over the past seven years, Lexi has worked with thousands of high school students across Canada, mobilising them to be part of the solution. She hopes that through early education, we can reduce the incidence of sexual violence on post-secondary campuses in years to come. If you have any questions please reach out to Deirdre Timusk.

Attendance is mandatory and required for any students interested in any form of leadership in Grade 12. We look forward to having them share with you some of their personal learnings from the day.

Havergal College in partnership with AFS Intercultural Programs is offering a microcredential on global competence called Global Up Teen. This program is a one-of-a-kind, blended program, open to teens (aged 14-17) to develop key global skills for the emerging future and build bridges across cultures, all while becoming part of a truly global community. Students will earn an HC Microcredential as well as an international certificate from AFS Canada. 

Students interested in Exchange, Global Learning Experiences, current Boarders and Global Learning Leading Diploma students would greatly benefit from the program’s curriculum. Watch a DEMO here. All necessary info can be found below:

A Message from the Heads: Cissy Goodridge & Deirdre Timusk

Dear Parents & Students,

The fall term ended on a high note with our Senior Year Presidents’ Holiday Assembly. The Havergal Staff Band—decked out in antlers and Santa hats, playing everything from trumpets to triangles—set the festive tone with walk-in and walk-out music. Every Grad lit up the stage with a dance performance with their House, all set to festive songs that had us laughing and cheering. The assembly wrapped up with a joyful sing-along and the announcement of our Holiday Angels Fundraiser for New Circles. We’re thrilled to share that, with your incredible support, we raised over $22,000 to help families in the Toronto area. Thank you for your generosity!

As students look forward to a well-deserved winter break filled with family, friends, and holiday cheer, we wish you all a restful and restorative time together. To those celebrating, we wish you a very Merry Christmas, and we can’t wait to see everyone refreshed and ready for an exciting new year ahead!

Our festive month of entertainment continues! Last night we welcomed our current and past community to St. Paul’s for the Carol Service. It was a spectacular evening filled with wonderful music which featured many of our talented students. 

The celebrations continue with an exciting week ahead! On Monday, our Tuba and Euphonium players (Grades 8-12) will bring holiday cheer to Prayers with their annual performance and on Tuesday, we’re proud to partner with Crescent School for an upcoming film festival. To cap off our week, the Class of 2025 will treat us to spirited performances at our Holiday Assembly.

As we embrace this season of giving and gratitude, we want to express our heartfelt thanks for your continued generosity and support of our community. We are very grateful for the gifts provided by your donation to the HCPA fund. If you choose to share an additional token of appreciation, we kindly ask that it remains modest, under $100 in value, in line with our employee policies. Locker Clean Out on Wednesday, December 18

The official locker clean out time will take place on Wednesday, December 18 at the end of the school day. Reminders will be sent to the students on Sunday to start taking things home. Students are allowed to leave binders, books and shoes in their lockers and they are allowed to keep their decorations up. We ask that clothing and all perishable items are removed from the lockers. Please ensure that your daughter has the necessary bags to bring her items home. 

COSSOT Permission Form Reminder

Havergal is a member of the Coalition of Single Sex Schools of Toronto (COSSOT). We have events with this group of schools throughout the year. Please ensure that you have completed your child’s COSSOT Event Registration Form. Without your completion of this form, your student will not be eligible to attend dances and other events with COSSOT schools.  There is now a link at the top of the parent portal of Veracross to facilitate completion.

In Form Programming This Week

Our Form and Spirit Reps have been busy planning winter celebrations for our entire middle school. Next week, our classes will be creating a winter wonderland in the MS hallway. Students are encouraged to bring in trimmings to decorate their classroom doors in a winter/holiday theme. On Wednesday, the students will participate in end of term parties, equipped with cookie decorating and treats.

University Workshop for McMaster Health Sciences Applications

On Wednesday, December 18, there will be a McMaster Health Sciences workshop for Grade 12 students in room B16 at 11:45 am. This workshop will focus on university applications. This is a great opportunity for students to discuss their applications and brainstorm ideas.

In Grade Programming Next Week

Next week, we will have winter celebrations for Grades 9, 10, and 11, with games, a scavenger hunt, and plenty of fun activities planned by their Grade Reps. Meanwhile, our Grads will meet in small groups to discuss university tasks to complete before the break and start reflecting on their upcoming transition from Havergal to university. Their insights will shape our programming for the rest of the year, ensuring we support their preparation for this exciting next step.

Havergal Varsity Jackets For Sale – Deadline Extended To Thursday, December 19

The Student Life departments at Havergal College have collaborated to offer Havergal College Varsity Jackets for purchase to students in Grades 9 – 12. Your daughter can show her school spirit by wearing Havergal’s own varsity jacket. Traditionally these jackets are worn to represent school and team pride as well as to display teams, clubs or other meaningful accomplishments throughout her time in the Senior School.  This is an optional purchase. The jacket cannot be worn in class but it can be casual wear, worn to sports games and other co-curriculars. A sample will be available to try on in the PE office.

Exchange Program Introduction Session: Wednesday, January 15

Havergal’s exchange program provides an exchange opportunity for Grade 8 and Grade 10 students in the academic year 2025 – 2026. Current Grade 7 and Grade 9 students and families interested in this opportunity are invited to the Introductory Session to the Global Exchange Program for 2025/26 on Tuesday, January 15 from 6 – 7:30 pm in the BRH. A Message from the Heads: Cissy Goodridge & Deirdre Timusk

Dear Parents & Students,

Affectionately known as the month of entertainment, December is the month that showcases the talents of many of our student artists.  Last week, we kicked off the month with our Middle School Play and this week we were delighted by the Middle and Senior School Music Nights. Our students appreciate your presence at these events, and we are grateful for your support in celebrating their achievements.

Looking ahead, there is more entertainment in store for you!  We are excited to welcome you to our annual Carol Service at St. Paul’s. This beloved tradition captures the spirit of the season and demonstrates the vibrant artistic life of our school community. As a reminder, all students are expected to participate in the Carol Service. If for some exceptional reason, a student is not able to attend a note must be sent to the appropriate Head of School. We value this opportunity to come together as a full school community.

We look forward to seeing you as we celebrate this service of music and community.

Global Exchange Program Introduction Session: January 15, 2025

Havergal’s exchange program provides an exchange opportunity for Grade 8 and Grade 10 students in the academic year 2025 – 2026. Current Grade 7 and Grade 9 students and families interested in this opportunity are invited to the Introductory Session to the Global Exchange Program for 2025/26 on Tuesday, January 15 from 6 – 7:30 pm in the BRH.

The nature of our Global Exchange program requires us to have a mandatory, in-person session for families who are interested in applying to the exchange program for the 25/26 school year. The student who is interested in participating in the exchange and one parent/guardian are required to attend this meeting to be considered for the program. 

This meeting will provide a comprehensive overview of the Global Exchange Program, an incredible opportunity for students to immerse themselves in diverse cultures, build global connections, and gain invaluable experiences abroad. The session will cover the application process, exchange locations, the commitment level we require from families, as well as the benefits of participating in this life-changing program.

We will have our exchange student ambassadors attending this meeting to share their experiences and answer any questions families have about the program.

Celebrating STEM Excellence: Beaver Computing Challenge Highlights

The Beaver Computing Challenge is just one of the University of Waterloo contests that are offered by the Math & Computer Science Department. For more information on upcoming math contests, students are encouraged to speak with their math teacher.  

Congratulations to Jessie G and Mia T in Grade 7 who earned perfect scores on the Beaver Computing Challenge. A six way tie for second place went to Aubrie C, Shannon G, Kaylee J, Xinyue Z, and Rachael Z in Grade 9, and Yutong W also in Grade 7. Bravo! Thank you to Mr. Cardinale for hosting this opportunity for our young STEM minds.

In Form Programming This Week

In Form programming this week, our MS students will be delighted by our Grade 8 Exec Holiday Assembly. Our student leaders have planned an exciting program filled with Middle School trivia, name that movie and team challenges. Thank you to our MS Prefects for helping our Exec plan this programming.

MS Crafting with Grade 12s

This week the students in Forms 7IJ /8IJ and all others who like to participate can enjoy lunch time crafting sessions, hosted by Grade 12 students. Please join us in Room C32 for some music, crafting and hanging out with friends. Students who missed their designated week are welcome to join in too.  Let’s get crafty!

SENIOR SCHOOL

Grade 9/10 Social and Dance This Evening!

Over 350 students from Havergal and other local independent schools will be coming to Havergal tonight for the dance. Students are to arrive between 7 and 8 pm as the doors close by 8 pm. The dance ends at 10 pm and we ask that all students are picked up promptly. We are looking forward to a great evening!

In Grade Programming Next Week

Next week our Grade 11 students will be taking part in a session entitled “The Leader in You” which builds on the work they started a few weeks ago. Students in Grade 10 will explore the importance of self and social awareness in building healthy relationships and fostering emotional intelligence. There will be another university counselling session with our Grads and finally, our Grade 9 reps have something special in store for their fellow students.

Guidance Team Fireside Chats

The Guidance Counsellors will begin their annual Fireside Chats from December 9 – 18 for Grade 11 and 12 students. This is a great opportunity for students to drop by the Temerty Commons during their spare or lunchtime and ask any questions they may have about current courses or university preparation.

  • Regular uniform (not #1) is required during the school day. 
  • Students wear their #1 Dress Uniform for the Carol Service.
  • Students should arrive at 6:15 pm and be seated by 6:45 pm.
  • Grades 7 & 8 sit by Form. 
  • Grades 9 – 12 sit by House.
