The Salon is a student-led art exhibition at Havergal. It was originally founded by Old Girls Rowaida Hussein and Lilly Li (Class of 2016); this year’s hosts are Lillian Wei and Natalie Huang .

The Salon is a reference to the Paris Art Salon of 1748-1890. However, unlike the highly exclusive nature of the Paris space, our exhibition is open to all students, faculty and staff. It also welcomes all forms of visual art, displaying different media such as paintings, crafts, collages, sculptures, photography and more. In short, The Salon is a place for everyone to display and share artwork made outside of Havergal.

The opening of the exhibition is Monday, April 3rd from 4pm to 6pm at the Bio Wall. The show will run until Thursday, April 13, 2023.

We welcome everyone to join us in celebrating the Visual Arts at Havergal!

Kyla Fox – Disordered Eating Expert – Student & Parent Presentations

This month we are excited to welcome guest speaker Kyla Fox, Founder and Clinical Therapist of The Kyla Fox Centre, a private eating disorder recovery centre in Toronto.

Kyla Fox has established herself as a visionary and innovator, when it comes to re-framing the way Canadians think about and treat eating disorders. As someone who struggled with an eating disorder, Fox identified care gaps and fundamental flaws in the treatment and recovery approach. Kyla brings deep and varied experiences to her work and will be helping our students to expand their knowledge base around disordered eating and one’s relationship with food, by challenging the language around eating disorders and providing awareness and prevention in a way that is beyond the “typical” eating disorder rhetoric.

Kyla will be speaking with students on the following dates during the Wednesday morning Form/Advisory time:

April 12 – Grades 9-12

April 26 –  Grades 7 and 8

After each session, students will have the opportunity to take part in a 70 minute post-conversation discussion with Kyla in a smaller group setting. Interested students will be emailed the link to sign up.

Kyla Fox – Parent Presentation

With all of the unique challenges that face young people today, it can be easy to overlook the ways this can manifest in how our children see themselves and their bodies. Social media and media representation, academic competitiveness, family pressures, peer and social pressures, all contribute to the overall well-being of our children and their sense of self.

Kyla will host an honest and educational discussion with parents that invites them to share, engage and address head-on the challenges that face our kids and how this affects the way they view their bodies and impacts their self-esteem.

Kyla will share her personal story and examples from her 20+ years of work with kids and teens.  She will provide parents with a comprehensive understanding of how we can start to change the narrative through openness and transparency around the root causes of eating disorders, disordered eating and negative body image.

 Date: Tuesday April 25, 2023

Time: 7 PM – 8:30 PM

Location: Havergal College, Brenda Robson Hall

An Invitation to “Parents as Force Multipliers”: David Bott

Wellbeing Science Expert David Bott will be speaking to parents on Wednesday, March 29 ( 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm) in the Brenda Robson Hall. David Bott, an internationally known education consultant and expert in applied wellbeing science, will be our guest from March 27 – 31. David has worked with some of the world’s leading schools to help guide wellbeing vision and strategy. During his time at Havergal, David will be engaging with students, faculty and staff and delivering sessions that provide tactical strategies to support their wellbeing.

As part of this important work, David would also like to engage with parents on both the role of wellbeing in schools and how parents can enhance this important work. He will provide parents with practical tips and strategies to support their children’s wellbeing.

We hope you will be able to join us. Please RSVP here. Should you have any questions, please contact Ariana Ameree, Executive Assistant to the Deputy Principal, at 416-483-3519 ext. 6654, aameree@havergal.on.ca. Please note that light refreshments will be served from 6:30 pm – 7:00 pm.

Exam Preparation

Teachers will be working with students during April and May to help them prepare for their exams and final culminating assessments. Students will also learn exam preparation techniques in our Wednesday morning advising sessions. Some subjects have an exam, some have a culminating assessment and some have both. The dates for the culminating assessments will be determined by April 1st and posted to the Veracross Gradebook and will appear on student calendars. We ask that you do not book appointments or trips during the exam period.

It is important that students are in class for review periods and work periods as these are factored into the due dates for assessments. Teachers check in with students during these times and it is a good time for students to ask questions and seek direction if they are confused. Students with accommodations must see their learning support specialist before the end of April.

Students with exam conflicts should make an appointment to see their Guidance counsellor before the end of April. An exam conflict occurs when a student has:

  1. two or more exams scheduled at the same time;
  2. more than two exams scheduled on the same day;
  3. four or more exams scheduled on two consecutive weekdays;
  4. two or more exams scheduled on the same day for a student who has a documented learning support and/or guidance assessment accommodation;
  5. a school-sanctioned athletic tournament, provincial, national, or international competition;
  6. a documented extenuating circumstance.

A Reminder of Graduation Requirements – OSSLT & Community Service Hours

It is important for parents and students to understand that the OSSLT and Community Service Hours are graduation requirements that need to be completed in order for students to receive their OSSD. Students must follow the instructions and participate in the OSSLT practice sessions in order to be prepared and set up for success for their OSSLT test day. Moreover, Community Service Hours must be completed during high school, recorded on Veracross and submitted to the Forum for Change Office in the Resource Centre in order for students to be eligible to graduate. March Break is a great time for students to volunteer in organizations and opportunities that they are passionate about.

Support for Turkey & Syria

Students at Havergal are asking for our community’s support. As most of you know, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 hit 11 cities in Turkey and Northwest Syria last week. Turkey was also hit with an aftershock with a magnitude of 7.5. The current death toll is estimated to be around 30,000 and the numbers keep increasing. This is why we decided to raise money to donate to victims in both countries. Havergal has partnered with Red Cross Canada to create a donation page to send donations, which you can access via the link below.

Please remember that even with $5 you can donate 13 loaves of bread, 10 bottles of water, 7 pairs of socks, or 2 blankets. Every dollar matters. Thank you, Havergal! Our goal is to raise $3000 in aid by March Break!

Updating Your Daughter’s Vaccines – TPH is coming to Havergal

On Friday. March 3, nurses from Toronto Public Health will be at Havergal to provide vaccinations to students. This optional catch-up clinic will take place during school hours, and will offer Meningococcal, Hepatitis B and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines. These vaccines prevent cancers and meningitis, protect students against serious infections, and are usually offered to students in Grade 7. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, some students did not receive these life saving vaccines, especially those students currently enrolled in Grades 9 and 10.

If your child is missing any doses of these vaccines, they can still catch up! To have your child vaccinated, be sure to complete and return your signed consent form. The consent form must be completed by a parent or legal guardian. Students won’t be able to receive these important vaccines at the school clinic without a signed consent form. On the day of the clinic, we ask that students remember to wear a loose sleeved shirt, eat something before the clinic, and bring a mask. Also bring valid ID or a health card and their yellow immunization card, if available.

Parents and students can review an information package and access the consent form by clicking the links below. Please print the completed consent form, sign it, and have your child bring it to Ms. Danto in room B10 by Wednesday, March 1, 2023. Students will sign up for a time slot on their Veracross page. Sign up details will be communicated directly to the students.

WELLBEING UPDATE

Seasonal Blues

Written by Sarah Brodie, York University Master of Social Work Student

As we move into February many of us have had our fill of cold, grey days. Coming down from the excitement of beginning a new year and realizing spring is still a ways away can be tough.

It is not uncommon to experience seasonal blues. You may be finding that it takes extra effort to fill your cup and perhaps some days it doesn’t even feel possible. While some of us may find it helpful to label our experience through a diagnosis (such as Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD), others may find it more helpful to simply recognize it as a normal part of the human experience living in Canada at this time of year. Whatever your opinion, there are basic things you can do that can help shift your mood. From these four simple actions big shifts are possible. To learn more click on this link
