Friday, November 28

November came to a close this week with the spectacular Middle School play. It was so great to see how talented our students are and how much fun they had working together on this production. The final performance is tonight at 7 pm. It’s not too late to join us!

With December around the corner, the urge to “hustle” often creeps in, and students can get worn down. However, our Head of Upper School, Krista Koekkoek, reminded us this week that self-compassion is the key to resilience, noting that “when we treat ourselves with warmth… we can be more hopeful.”

To practice self-compassion and protect our peace during this busy season, let’s get back to basics:

  • Eat Breakfast: We need energy to learn, and fueling up is the best way to start the day!
  • Prioritize Sleep: Please help your child prioritize rest. If you see that this is not possible because of academic load, please reach out to your child’s guidance counsellor for a more extended discussion.
  • Stay Home When Sick: Pushing through illness doesn’t help anyone. Please take the time to recover fully before returning to school.

Wishing you all a restful weekend and a joyful start to the holiday season.

Deirdre

Announcing a New Microcredential in Futures & Foresight from HC-X

Interested in Business, Entrepreneurship, Design or Innovation? The Futures & Foresight Microcredential is a new learning opportunity designed in partnership with OCAD for students in Grades 10–12.

This microcredential introduces students to the field of futures thinking, which helps people make sense of rapid change, imagine what might be possible, and plan for the future with confidence and creativity. Emerging research highlights that cultivating futures literacy—the ability to understand and work with change—improves student wellbeing by building optimism, resilience, and a stronger sense of control over what comes next.

To ground these ideas in experience, students will take part in several industry-facilitated sessions—both onsite at Havergal and offsite at OCAD University.

The dates are:

  • Thursday, January 29, 2026 (afternoon, on campus)
  • Monday, March 2Wednesday, March 4, 2026 (full days, offsite – OCADU)
  • Friday, April 17th, 2026 (afternoon, on campus)
  • Monday, April 20th, 2026 (after school, on campus)

Guided by leading industry experts, students in this microcredential will:

  • Learn how futurists use foresight tools, trends, and scenarios to understand how the world is changing.
  • Understand how foresight is used in business, innovation, and entrepreneurship to spot opportunities and make strategic decisions.
  • Collaborate with peers to design ideas and pathways toward preferred futures.
  • Develop curiosity, creative confidence, and resilience, key skills for navigating uncertainty.
  • Build problem-solving and adaptive thinking skills that are valuable in any field.

Interested students should submit their application by Monday, December 15th, to be considered. Space is limited! There is no additional cost for this program.

Imagine what’s possible. Explore what’s changing. Shape what’s next.

Next Week in Grade Programming

Grade 9: Students will revisit their conversations that began with Jake Ernst’s visit last week to continue discussing their online presence and its impact.

Grade 10: This session introduces students to what it means to be an ally and explores the actions, attitudes, and language that help create more inclusive and supportive communities.

Grade 11: Our Director of Student Leadership will lead this leadership session, and students will learn how to handle setbacks when things don’t go as planned.

Grade 12: Students will learn more about the Havergal Connections platform, which connects them with alumni eager to help our students navigate life after Havergal. They will learn how to reach out and why these connections are so important for their future.

Friday, November 21

In 1894, Ellen Knox asked the Havergal students: “What are you going to do?” This past week, we discussed this question in our Middle School council meeting. At this time of year, when we are called upon to give, our goal is to help our students explore the world of philanthropy and service.

During this holiday season, we are asking our students to contribute to three deserving programs. We Scare Hunger and the Winter Clothing Drive invite you to take a moment to look through your cupboards or closets. This simple act costs nothing, just a few minutes of your time. The Holiday Angels program requires a donation of your time and money. This decades long tradition supports 12 families who are new to Canada, often relocating from a difficult situation.

This past week, our student leaders shared the stories of each of these families with their peers. In Middle School, the girls did the math and realized that a donation of 10 or 20 dollars would cover every request on our families list. The girls committed to act, to remind each other to bring in a gently used item and to create a Form challenge of $500 in gift cards from Best Buy or No Frills. Our hope is that our entire community will get behind these initiatives and commit to an action that will make a difference in the lives of others.

With gratitude,

Cissy

New Science of Learning & Wellbeing Course

Two years ago, we welcomed Dr. Lisa Damour, a renowned clinical psychologist and New York Times bestselling author specializing in adolescent development, to spend time with our students, faculty, and parents.

When we asked Dr. Damour how we could best support our students’ growth in an increasingly complex world, her advice was clear: create a dedicated course that helps students understand their brains, their emotions, and how to navigate the sensitive challenges unique to teenage girls.

This insight led to the development of our new, Havergal-developed course: The Science of Learning & Wellbeing.

Launching in January, all Grade 7 students will participate in this 10-lesson program. It will be co-taught by a cross-functional team of our experts, including Guidance Counsellors, Learning Support Specialists, our Social Worker, and the Chaplain.

The primary goal is simple: to give students the knowledge to become active agents of their own learning and emotional health. Students will explore core concepts in neuroscience, psychology, and education—all tailored to be age-appropriate and immediately applicable.

They will develop a deeper, scientific understanding of:

  • How their brains process information and learn most effectively.
  • The connection between stress, attention, and focus.
  • The best strategies for taking care of their mental and social-emotional wellbeing.

By understanding the science, we aim to empower every student with the essential knowledge and skills needed to flourish both inside and outside the classroom.

A Note for Grade 7 Parents: Stay tuned! We will provide you with a learning guide early next year so you can engage in meaningful conversations with your daughters about their new insights. Please contact Director of Guidance (7-9), Kirsten Uhre, if you have questions about the course.

Friday, November 14

It was another eventful week in the Upper School, showcasing the vibrant scope of our students’ interests. We saw over 250 participants in a Classics Tournament, the Brenda Robson Hall buzzing with our HC-X department’s futures and foresight research, and the gym filled with support for our fall athletes in the Athletic Assembly. These moments, while seemingly routine, offered me a moment to step back and reflect on the depth and breadth of experiences our community engages in. It is in this varied engagement that our strength truly lies.

That same powerful spirit will continue next week as we intentionally celebrate the diversity that makes us an even stronger community. Students will lead our Tuesday Prayers and explore the critical concept of intersectionality. This shared moment, which recognizes how our unique identities overlap and enrich us, already gives me goosebumps. It is the type of ‘routine’ moment that will continue to foster the profound sense of belonging we value.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our community each week, your trust in us, and for your fabulous, curious, driven daughters. They make us better every day.

Have a great weekend,

Krista

Thursday, November 6

Dear Parents,

With the recent time change and the arrival of darker evenings, our students’ sleep patterns are already shifting. Luckily, our upcoming November break offers the perfect opportunity for a “Sleep Reset” to establish healthier habits.

Many teenagers are not getting the rest they need. Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics, shows that electronic devices are a major culprit:

  • Nearly 1 in 4 young teens have been woken up by a phone notification in the past week.
  • Students who keep their phones within reach overnight get significantly less sleep than those who keep them out of the room (8.6 hrs vs 9.3 hrs).

The stimulating content, blue light exposure, and late-night notifications are all working against a good night’s rest.

During the break, we encourage you to try implementing the official recommendation: phones out of the bedroom overnight. Consider a central charging station instead, and buy a simple alarm clock. While this rule might seem tricky to enforce, remember that research shows that just having clear nighttime tech rules—whether or not they are perfectly followed—makes a difference in when teens go to bed and their total sleep time. At the very least, ensure notifications are turned off and the phone is placed across the room.

Sleep is foundational to wellbeing and academic focus. By resetting tech habits now, your child will return from the break better rested, more focused, and ready to go!

Have a lovely long weekend,

Deirdre

Reflections: Self-Confidence in a Changing World

Last week, the Havergal Old Girls’ Association (HOGA) brought together Old Girls/Alum, parents, and educators for an authentic conversation about how confidence, body image, and belonging evolve in today’s world.

Moderated by Christina Sorbara, with panellists Nicole Tapscott ’02, Dr. Nina Mafrici ’02, Dr. Michele Foster, and Krista Koekkoek, the discussion explored how social and cultural shifts —including social media, perfectionism, and post-pandemic pressures —are shaping how girls feel about and in their bodies. From a psychological perspective, fostering confidence today means helping youth stay connected to their inner experiences, challenge unrealistic standards, and feel seen and supported in all aspects of who they are.

Five key takeaways emerged:

  1. Model body trust and self-compassion: Confidence begins with adults who respect and care for their own bodies and emotions.
  2. Focus on function, not form: Emphasize what bodies do (e.g., move, create, express), rather than how they look.
  3. Normalize emotions and body signals: Encourage awareness of hunger, rest, joy, and discomfort as gateways to self-understanding.
  4. Create safe, inclusive spaces: Confidence flourishes where diversity is visible and belonging is felt.
  5. Encourage agency and critical thinking: Help girls question cultural pressures, make authentic choices, and set healthy boundaries.

The evening served as an important reminder that when schools, families, and communities work together to nurture body trust, self-compassion, and a sense of belonging, we lay the foundation for resilience and authentic confidence to thrive. The positive response from parents and educators highlights a shared commitment to continuing this dialogue and to ensuring our girls grow up grounded, confident, and connected.

Health Centre Reminder – Viral Illness Season

As we move further into the viral illness season, we are seeing an increase in common respiratory and gastrointestinal viruses. We kindly ask families to monitor their children for any signs of illness and to keep students home if they are unwell.

Symptoms that warrant staying home include:

  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Cough and congestion
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • General fatigue or feeling unwell

Keeping students home when they are sick helps protect classmates, staff, and our broader school community. Students may return to school once they are feeling better and able to fully participate in the school day.

Please refer to the image linked here for a helpful visual reminder of when to stay home and when to return.

Thank you for your support in keeping our school community healthy!

Thank you for the support of our veterans.

In Form This Week

We have a short week and just one full form session. During that time the MS will travel to be with their House! Through purposeful mentorship and shared experiences that span all grade levels, we ensure the enduring spirit and unique traditions of Havergal are seamlessly carried forward.

We are especially in need of men’s and boys’ winter coats, hats, and gloves. Students are encouraged to bring their donations to their Form rooms by Friday, November 21.

Friday, October 31

One of the greatest strengths of our community is the way we come together to share our diverse experiences and support one another. This week, our student leaders, alumni, and school spirit were all in full swing, reminding us how fortunate we are to learn and grow together each day.

We began the week with Wellbeing Prayers, a meaningful celebration of our shared commitment to nurturing mental health and wellbeing across our community. Our Wellbeing Prefects and their council opened the gathering by sharing their hopes and plans for promoting wellbeing throughout the year.

That same evening, our Havergal Connection Series brought together current parents and alumni to explore practical ways to help students build resilience and self-confidence as they navigate today’s complex world. It was a thoughtful and engaging conversation that truly reflected our community’s care for student growth and wellbeing.

Midweek, on Thrive Day there were plenty of smiles as we welcomed the Sunshine Therapy Dogs to campus. Their visit offered students a joyful and calming opportunity to pause, connect, and recharge — an experience that quickly became a highlight of the week.

As the week came to a close, we fully embraced the Halloween spirit with pumpkin carving, costume contests, door decorating, candy, and games — making it a Halloween to remember!

Happy Halloween – LET’S GO JAYS – and have a great weekend,

Cissy

Middle School

In Form programming next week

  • In Grade 7 next week, we’ll explore what it truly means to create a community where everyone feels valued and supported. We’ll begin by unpacking key terms—equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging—to build a shared understanding of their meanings and how they connect to our daily experiences. A particular focus will be placed on the difference between equity and equality. Through discussion and examples, we’ll consider how these ideas shape the way we interact, learn, and build a more just environment together.
  • In Grade 8, students will work with our guidance team to deepen their understanding of the differences between worry, stress, and anxiety. Through guided discussions and case studies, they will develop greater self-awareness and practice applying effective strategies to manage their emotions in positive ways.

Dear US Families,

We hope you were able to connect with your child’s teachers over the past few days. We appreciate your partnership immensely and know that our work together improves your daughter’s learning and engagement at Havergal. Please never hesitate to be in touch as things evolve or change for her and we will do the same. If there were patterns you would like to explore further, reach out to their Guidance Counsellor as a starting point.

We welcomed back 173 musicians back from our Senior School Music Camp. Their enthusiastic fatigue speaks to the depth of the experience and their stories, the depth of the connections made. We can’t wait to hear the fruits of their labour in upcoming concerts and thank our exceptional music faculty and Director of Arts for fostering such an incredible experience.

Have a lovely weekend,

Krista

Friday, October 17

Dear US Families,

It has been another great week in the Upper School. The Diwali Prayers was especially colourful and engaging; we thank all of the students, staff and families involved in its creation.

Students were reminded this week that their collective efforts on the uniform have been appreciated and those still struggling to meet the kilt length requirement (9 cm or a playing card above the knee) will be invited to a detention Friday morning. We appreciate your partnership as we work with students on this important community piece.

We will, however, forsake our Gator Green kilt for blue this weekend as we cheer on our Toronto Blue Jays.

Have a great weekend,

The US Leadership Team

Music Retreat 2025 + Koerner Hall Performance, March 3, 2026

Music Co-Curriculars are very excited to return to Campfire Circle this October 20-22 for our annual and extraordinary Music Retreat.  We will be accompanied by a host of gifted musicians as we rehearse and prepare for upcoming performances at Fall Music Night on December 2nd, our beloved Carol Service on December 10, and a very special Spring Music Night on March 3rd.

Music Retreat carries extra significance this year as we look forward to the remarkable opportunity of performing Spring Music Night at Koerner Hall.  It will be a memorable evening with special guests, and it will provide our students with the opportunity to perform in the most acoustically engaging hall in Toronto.  We hope you will join us!

We will email information about reserving tickets for March 3rd as soon as possible.

Feel free to contact Matthew Varey with any questions.

Parent-Teacher Conferences, Thursday, October 23 and Friday, October 24

We are looking forward to next week’s Parent-Teacher conferences. These conferences provide an opportunity for teachers to share with you your daughter’s progress, celebrate successes, and discuss next steps for continued support. At this early stage, the focus is on observable learning skills and initial understanding of course content rather than on evaluations or marks. You might find the following guiding questions helpful in framing the conversation:

  • “What areas and concepts in the course does my daughter understand well? What areas does she find challenging?”
  • “What learning skills is my daughter showing that contribute positively to her learning? What are some learning skills that might be causing barriers to her learning?”
  • “What can I do to support my daughter’s learning at home?”

Instructions on how to book a time with your daughter’s teacher and set up the Zoom call are found in the Reminders section of The Weekly just below.

Reminder – Safety at Havergal

Though we appreciate the safe environment the Havergal campus affords, please speak with your daughters about what to do if they ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe walking or taking public transit to school. It is helpful for them to be aware of their surroundings and know what to do.

Middle School

What We Learned This Week in Middle School: Continue the Conversation At Home.

This week in Middle School, our Grade 7 students learned about stress management. They explored the differences between stress, worry, and anxiety, and practiced simple strategies to help manage their emotions when challenges arise.

Grade 8 students engaged with our Win@social program and explored three main themes: Who do I look up to? How can others influence us on and offline? And how can we find influences that bring out the best in us? Students engaged in discussions about watching TikTok and YouTube and how to decide which voices they should be listening to. If you’d like to keep the conversation going, try one of these family huddle questions:

  • Besides family members, who is one person you consider a role model and why?
  • Sometimes, we meet people who have a negative influence on us. If someone you’re following on social media or spending time with isn’t making you happy or helping you reach your goals, how can we support you as a family?

Havergal Dance October 17th 7 – 9 pm

It’s not too late! If your child has missed the registration for the Havergal MS Dance, please email Cissy Goodridge at cgoodridge@havergal.on.ca to register your daughter’s interest in attending. We encourage all of our students to attend.

Havergal’s Guidelines on Public Statements

At Havergal College, our role is to teach students how to think, not what to think. Following consultation with our Senior Leadership Team and a special task force of the Board of Governors, we have established guidelines on issuing public statements. The Board of Governors endorsed these guidelines earlier this week. In line with these, Havergal will not release public statements on geopolitical or sociopolitical events. As a day and boarding school with a diverse, international community, our responsibility is to help students develop the skills necessary to engage in respectful dialogue and critical thinking. You can find the guidelines on public statements and an accompanying FAQ in the Policies, Procedures & Agreements section of our parent portal

We know that both local and world events over the past few years have been difficult for many in our community, and we remind students and families that we have support available through our student support team, along with access to external supports for students as necessary.

We’ve partnered with COSSOT (Coalition of Single Sex Schools of Toronto) to offer students a variety of social events, including dances and bowling nights, where they can meet students from other schools.

To streamline the process, we’re asking parents to complete a single AAR (parent permission form) for all COSSOT events. This form gives permission for your child to participate in any of these events throughout the year.

Tupperware, Everywhere!

Please ask your daughter to pick up your Tupperware and other types of containers that were left behind from baking cookies for the Celebration Saturday event. There’s a table full of these items outside of B10. Please note: If there are still any left on the table by the end of Tuesday, October 7, they will be recycled.

Friday, September 26

We’re writing to you today to ask for your support in reinforcing our school’s uniform policy. Our uniform is more than just clothing; it’s a key part of our school’s identity and community.

The “Why” Behind the Uniform
The school uniform is designed to foster a sense of school pride and belonging. When students wear the uniform correctly, they are visually representing our shared community and values. It’s like being part of a team—everyone wearing the same jersey. It helps students focus on what really matters: their character, actions, and thoughts, rather than their clothing.

We understand that for adolescents, pushing boundaries is a natural part of growing up. However, these boundaries, including our uniform policy, provide a necessary structure that helps them navigate their environment. The uniform sets an appropriate tone for the school setting, preparing them for future professional environments where dressing appropriately for the occasion is important.

Key Focus Areas
To make this a smooth and successful process, we’re focusing on a few key areas of the uniform. We’re not aiming to be overly strict or punitive, but rather to bring everyone back to the same standard.

  • Kilt Length: The official policy, which is in the student handbook, states that kilts should be no more than nine centimeters from the top of the knee. To help with a visual, this is about the length of a playing card. We are not going to be measuring kilts, but this is a helpful guide for students and families.
  • White Dress Shirt: Shirts should be neatly tucked in at all times.

We’re also reminding students about other uniform details, like wearing their tie properly, keeping their socks up, and wearing the correct shoes.

Next Steps
We’ve enlisted our student leaders to help us. Our prefects, house captains, and council members are actively modeling the correct uniform and will be assisting with gentle reminders; they are committed to helping their peers. We’ve been talking with all students in assemblies, and with the faculty to ensure consistent, kind messaging. We are providing students with a week grace to purchase any needed uniform items they have outgrown. We truly appreciate your partnership in this, and as always, reach out with any questions.

Thank you,
US Leadership Team (Krista, Deirdre, Cissy, and Nicole)
