Thursday, April 2, 2026

Over the past two weeks, our Grade 9 students stepped outside the traditional classroom for TC-9, an interdisciplinary journey designed to help them see themselves as changemakers. Grounded in Havergal’s mission, the program challenged students to examine global issues and ask, “How can I make a difference?”

Students chose a focus area connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. They explored complex issues through various lenses, including:

  • Sustainability: Climate Action, circular design, and urban farming.
  • Community & Wellbeing: Social justice through art, urban planning, and the importance of play.

The program wasn’t just theoretical. Students met with local leaders and took full-day excursions across the city to see how big ideas translate into local action. To help them process these experiences, we introduced several problem-solving frameworks:

  • Systems & Futures Thinking: Learning to see the big picture and imagining the long-term impact of today’s choices.
  • Design Thinking: A hands-on approach to creating solutions that actually work for people.

By the end of the program, students weren’t just thinking about problems; they were shaping personal action plans. We saw a wonderful shift in the girls as they developed greater agency and optimism. They are walking away not just with new knowledge, but with the confidence that they have the tools to contribute to a better world.

We truly appreciated the opportunity to work with your smart, curious, and talented daughters!Jeff Adams, Allison Campbell-Rogers and Adam Caplan, The HC-X Team

Friday, March 27, 2026

Dear Upper School Families,

It was so lovely to welcome our students back to school on Tuesday after the March Break! I love days back after extended breaks – students are so excited to see each other and their teachers. There is always a buzz that makes me know what a great community we have.

On Monday of this past week, our faculty and staff welcomed educational consultant Eric Hudson to campus for a professional development day on the future of generative AI in education. Eric guided us through AI skills and tools in the morning session, with a deep dive in the afternoon focused on assessment strategies and the future of writing.  Through hands-on learning, practical examples, and Q&A, Eric discussed what it means to be human in an AI world, emphasized the importance of thoughtful integration, and shared three AI skills for educators and students: literacy, learning, and ethics. We are excited to bring these insights to our work and classrooms. Eric highlighted the importance of seeking student feedback as we proceed, and that is certainly at the forefront as we consider next steps.

To our families celebrating Passover next week, we hope it is a lovely time with family and friends.

Warmly,

Krista

Registration for Founders’ Day: Thursday, April 23

Founders’ Day is a longstanding tradition in the life of Havergal that brings together students and faculty from both the Junior and Upper Schools alike to mark the anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone on Avenue Road in 1926.

This year’s Founders’ Day celebration will be held at 9:45 am on Thursday, April 23, at St. Paul’s Bloor Street Church (227 Bloor Street East) – Havergal’s original parish church. Attendance is mandatory for all Upper School students.

A part of the Founders’ Day tradition includes hearing the Junior School (Grades 1-6), Middle School, and Senior Choirs perform. The Graduating Class will receive and process into the church wearing Marguerite Pins awarded by Dr. Samson – a gift from the Havergal Old Girls Association (HOGA). The Marguerite Pin symbolizes a graduating student’s passage into the Old Girls/Alums network of over 9,500 members.

We request that you show your support of the school by ensuring your daughter attends this important celebratory event.

All US parents must register by Friday, April 10, at 9 am. Please see the AAR here.

If circumstances prevent your child from attending, please indicate the absence on Veracross using the Report Attendance feature by Friday, April 10, at 9 am.

Important Details

  • Students must wear their #1 Dress Uniform: a pressed blouse, kilt, pants, or tunic; blazer; tie; black shoes; and green socks.
  • Upper School students are to make their own way to the church (227 Bloor Street East) by 9:15 am. The closest subway station is Yonge/Bloor or Sherbourne. They will then check in with their Form Teacher or Teacher Advisor for attendance.
  • Boarding students will be bused from Havergal to St. Paul’s, departing at 8:15 am.
  • Grade 12’s will be presented with their Marguerite Pins by Dr. Samson at 9:15 am in Cody Hall.
  • Upper School students will be bused back to the school from the church by Form/House.
  • Grade 12 students, if indicated on the permission form, may organize their own transportation back to school.

Please reach out to Matthew Varey, Director of Arts, if you have any questions.

As a school dedicated to preparing young women to make a difference, we are committed to ensuring that our students are ready to enter the ever-changing world with the confidence and skills they need to thrive after graduation. Empowering Excellence is our roadmap to make this a reality. Guiding our work and illustrating our commitment, three pillars are central to our plan: Connection, Wellbeing & Belonging, Future-Ready and Transforming Tomorrow.

This year’s progress update builds on the momentum realized in year one, moving from planning to action. It highlights the opportunities, resources and support that allow every Havergal student to realize their full potential. Thank you for embarking on this journey with us; your dedication is the driving force behind our progress! We look forward to continuing our work and shaping future difference-makers.

Huge congrats to the cast and crew of Clue—what a spectacular run! Also, our gratitude to the staff and students who participated in the Lunar New Year Prayers this week. It was great to have so many families join us to celebrate. It’s been a high-energy week, and the momentum isn’t slowing down. Between the upcoming Spring Music Night at Koerner Hall and our athletes fighting for CISAA titles, our calendar is officially packed.

March report cards will be available on Wednesday, March 4, at 4 pm.

They represent a snapshot of a student’s achievements, progress, and areas for growth at this point in the academic year. The objective of a report card is to communicate what a student has learned and how she is developing as a learner across each discipline. Partnership between Havergal and parents is key to student success. We encourage you to take time to review the report card, discuss it with your child, and identify any key themes or questions you might have. If you have any questions about specific courses, please reach out directly to the teacher; they are eager to partner with you.

Further information on accessing the report cards will be emailed next week. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Lam Nguyen, Dean of Academics.

Locker Clean Out

Students may leave only books, shoes, and their shelving in their lockers over the break.

Please encourage your daughter to bring home all uniform items and food containers. It’s a great opportunity to return to a fresh, clean space for the spring term.

Form Programming Next Week

Grade 7 students will continue with Parts 2 and 3 of their EDIB Identity unit. In this interactive activity, students will create identity flowers, with each petal representing a different part of who they are. From there, the students will create a Form bouquet which represents each member of their community.

Grade 8 students will participate in a Win@Social lesson exploring why adolescents may engage in risky behaviour. During the teen years, being with peers or experiencing strong emotions can heighten sensitivity to rewards, particularly social approval, thereby influencing decision-making. This session will help students better understand these influences and make thoughtful, informed choices.

In Form Next Week: Form Photos and Pink Shirt Day

Monday, February 23: Students in Grades 7 and 8 will have their Form photos taken. Please have your child arrive at school in their number one dress that day.

Wednesday, February 25: All students are welcome to wear a pink shirt over their uniform.

Grade 7s will recognize Pink Shirt Day and begin part one of their EDIB session exploring identity. In part one, students will explore their identity characteristics by reflecting on the many parts that make up who they are, such as their interests, culture, and values. Part 2-3 continues next week.

Grade 8’s will be working with our Director of Guidance and Learning Support, Ms. Urhe and our Gr 11 and 12 students on a Pink Shirt Day activity. Students are welcome to wear a pink shirt over their uniform if they wish.

Digital Device Policy

This past week, we reviewed our Digital Device Policy with Middle School students. As we know, personal devices can be a significant distraction during the school day, and our policy is designed to ensure students have a focused learning environment free from digital interruptions.

We kindly ask for your partnership in supporting this effort by refraining from texting your child during the school day. To further support students, we have removed iMessage access on computers and silenced notifications during instructional time.

We greatly appreciate your continued support in creating the best possible learning environment for all students.

Next Week in Grade Programming

Next week, our Grade 9 through 11 students will begin exploring upcoming leadership opportunities for the next school year. Keep an eye out for a short video we’ll be posting next week. It will outline the available roles and the transition process for our future student leaders.
To help our Grade 12s transition confidently to post-secondary life, our team is leading a session on Navigating University Social Scenes. Our goal is to empower students to enjoy their new independence while prioritizing their safety and wellbeing.

Leadership Eligibility: A Note on Attendance

We believe that our morning programming (TA, Grade Programming and House) cultivates connection, leadership development, and important skill-building in wellbeing and EDIB; therefore, being a student leader means attending morning programming regularly and engaging in this learning while modelling our school expectations for others. We have had conversations and follow-up with students this year who have a threshold of missing morning programming below 80%.

Students who are currently ineligible to run for leadership roles due to their attendance will be notified on Monday. If you or your child feels that our records do not reflect their situation, your child can submit additional information for consideration.

This request to review will be due on Wednesday, February 25, at 8:30 am. We recognize that every student’s situation is unique, and in this form, students can share any additional context or extenuating circumstances that have impacted their ability to attend morning programming.

Thursday, February 12, 2026

As parents, educators, and fellow Canadians, our hearts are with the families and community of Tumbler Ridge as they face an unimaginable loss. We hold them in our thoughts and prayers during this immensely difficult time.

We also recognize that news like this can affect our own students in many ways. Yesterday, we reminded Upper School Students that support is available at the school, including our Guidance Counsellors, Social Worker, Health Centre, and Chaplain, as well as the option to speak with any trusted adult of their choice. Reverend Ruch also opened space in the Chapel for prayer and quiet reflection.

As we conclude Spirit Week at Havergal, we’re reminded that this week is a time intentionally set aside to build connection, belonging, and community. In moments like this, leaning into community and connection matters. By caring for one another and staying connected, we strengthen the kind of community our children need.

We wish you time with loved ones this Family Day long weekend.

Take care,

Dr. Katrina Samson, Principal

Celebrating our Student Achievements

For the first time since 2022, our U20 team hit the ice on Tuesday, February 10 and delivered an unforgettable 4–3 victory over our rivals at BSS. In a hard-fought game, our players showed incredible determination and teamwork, from the opening faceoff to the final buzzer. We are so proud of the way they represented Havergal with skill, sportsmanship, and true spirit. Congratulations on an outstanding game and a well-earned victory. The Hewitt Cup is home where it belongs!

Congratulations to our senior bands for their successful performances at the Ontario Band Association Festival this past week. Concert Winds earned a Silver Award, and the Symphonic Band earned a Gold Award with an additional invitation to compete at Nationals. We are proud of them for their continued commitment to our music program!

Finally, congratulations to our DECA team for an incredible showing at the Ontario Provincials! Among 18,000 members, our students excelled in Toronto, demonstrating exceptional professionalism and earning 48 awards, including 8 Provincial Champion plaques. Nine students have been selected to represent Havergal & Ontario at the International Career Development Conference (ICDC), taking place this April in Atlanta, Georgia.

Ramadan Mubarak

As we approach the beginning of Ramadan, from Tuesday, February 17 to Thursday, March 19, we would like to acknowledge this important and sacred time for many of our families. Ramadan is a month centered on reflection, spiritual growth, service, and community. Our school is committed to supporting students throughout the month, particularly those who may be fasting or participating in additional prayers. We encourage families to have their child share their needs with guidance counsellors, teachers and coaches so we can provide appropriate understanding and support. During Ramadan, the Chapel will be available for lunch and break times as a space for prayer, rest, or quiet reflection.

We look forward to celebrating Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr together at US Prayers on Thursday, March 26. Please keep an eye out for an invitation to the Parent reception following Prayers—we’d love for you to join us!

Wishing all who are observing a reflective and meaningful Ramadan.

As we enter the final registration period, we invite families to sign up for our Global Learning Experiences taking place between September and December 2026. We look forward to seeing the spirit of our community come alive next week as we celebrate Spirit Week!

For our new families, this is a favourite tradition where we lean into some extra fun to brighten up these winter days. Students are invited (but not required) to participate by wearing attire that aligns with our daily themes. There will be fun dress-up opportunities, cheer competitions and, of course, our beloved Hockey Day. Please review the schedule below, listed in the Upper School section.

Pro-tip: There is no need to buy anything new! We encourage students to get creative with what they already have in their closets or dress-up bins. Whether it’s a full outfit or just a small accessory, we’re just excited to see their school spirit.

We can’t wait to join in the fun. Have a great weekend.

Friday, January 30, 2026

On Tuesday, January 27th, the Upper School observed International Holocaust Remembrance Day together in Prayers.  We had the honour of having Dr. Carol Lipszyc share the story of her mother’s survival during the years of the Holocaust in Lublin, Poland. Dr. Lipszyc shared footage of her interviewing her mother, telling the story of her escape. She then shared some poetry she wrote based on her mother’s stories.  Our Senior Vocal class gave a powerful performance of Ani Ma’amim, a song that has come to represent resistance in the Jewish culture. To learn more about Dr. Lipszyc and her work, visit the organization, Carrying Testimony from Generation to Generation.

Yesterday, our Grade 11 class stepped away from their daily routines to focus on the essential work of self-discovery and collective leadership. The day was intentionally designed to help each student find their unique voice, exploring the core values that define who they are and how they are meant to lead. Guest speaker Jules Porter provided a powerful spark for this journey, challenging the students to listen to their inner gut feelings and find the courage to live authentically in the world. This was complemented by Ms. Russell, our Director of Student Leadership, who encouraged the cohort to align those personal values with their passions to create a meaningful impact in the communities they care about. Through the guidance of our incredible Havergal facilitators, the Class of 2027 didn’t just grow as individuals—they bonded as a unified group. We left the retreat incredibly proud of their insight and energy, and we are eager to see the leadership and spirit they will continue to bring to the Havergal community.

We are looking forward to shaking off the cold weather with our Spirit Week activities in a few weeks. Be sure to check your cupboards for Green and Gold accessories and get ready for our beloved Hockey Day.

Form Programming Next Week

Next week in Form programming, students will explore their personal values, their role within different communities, and how they can support others. They will revisit the Community Agreements each grade created in the Fall and reflect on how they are upholding these commitments. This work not only supports students in setting values-based goals but also deepens their understanding of how they contribute to and care for their community.

Our Grade 8 assemblies are back with Form 8E and 8F presenting on Kindness and how to spread joy and do nice things for people in your community.

Grade 7 Science of Learning and Wellbeing Course – January 2026: Parent Overview

Grade 7 students are approximately halfway through the Science of Learning and Wellbeing mini-course. Our work has been centered around the question: “How does the brain support our learning and social-emotional wellbeing?” and emphasizes that Middle School is about learning how to learn, building self-awareness, and establishing positive learning habits.

Students examined how the brain learns through building and strengthening neural networks, highlighting the importance of practice for skill building. We emphasized that effortful practice (flashcards/quizzes) and spaced repetition (shorter, frequent sessions) are far more effective than re-reading or “cramming.” Students also explored emotion regulation and how to manage the “fast” emotional reactions of the amygdala using the “logical” prefrontal cortex.

To support your daughter’s ongoing self-reflection in this course, we invite you to use these discussion questions for conversations at home.

  • Ask your daughter what she has learned thus far in the course.
  • What has been a highlight of the course so far? Do you have a “fun fact” you can share with us?
  • What have you learned about how the brain makes neural connections? How does it apply to them as a learner?
  • Based on what they have learned, do they think they have effective study strategies? Is there a strategy that they learned that they might try? What is it? What course would they use it for?

Havergal’s Next: Data Scientist

  • Learn how to create meaningful insights, visualizations, and compelling data stories using actual industry tools
  • Explore topics such as Climate, Health, Cities, and Digital Safety, connected to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Building data literacy, analytical confidence, and transferable skills aligns with pathways in business, engineering, and computer science. Students will produce portfolio-ready work they can share beyond school. Designed for curious thinkers; no prior experience is required. Spaces are limited. Program fee applies. Please contact Allison Campbell-Rogers in HC-X if you have any questions. Students can apply through the link in the DSO announcements.

Dear Families,

It was a true pleasure to see so many of you in the Brenda Robson Hall this past Wednesday for our Academic & Course Planning Evening. It was nice to come together as a community, in person, to talk about the journey of your daughters’ education.

Our goal for the evening was to discuss the “why” behind our academic program. Whether it was our Dean of Academics, Lam Nguyen, discussing the importance of intentionality over volume in academic choices, or our Deputy Principal, Lindsay Norberg, highlighting the transformative power of our Global Experiences and Microcredentials, the message was clear: we are here to help your daughters find a path that is as unique as they are.

We want our students to be future-ready—not just by collecting credits, but by fostering a deep curiosity and the agency to shape the world around them.

For those who were unable to join us or would like to revisit the information, you can find the slide decks and resources here:

Grade 8 into 9
Grade 9 into 10
Grade 10 into 11

Thank you for your continued partnership. We look forward to the exciting planning conversations ahead!

Warmly,

Krista

26-27 Global Learning Experiences

We are pleased to announce our 2026–2027 Global Learning Experiences (GLE), which offer students meaningful opportunities to learn through immersion, reflection, and engagement with the world beyond school. Through these experiences, students develop curiosity, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the interconnected world.

Families are invited to explore the details of each experience by reviewing the 26-27 GLE Lookbook and visiting the school portal, where additional information about destinations and timelines is available.

We are also excited to introduce the Cyd Diane Stupp Award for Global Experiences. A new financial award designed to support student participation in Global Learning Experiences and to help ensure these opportunities are accessible to a broad range of families. Student application forms can be found on the portal or on the final page of the 26-27 GLE Lookbook

To support families in learning more, we invite you to save the date for a virtual Parent Information Session on Tuesday, February 4, at 6 pm. This session will provide an overview of the experiences, answer common questions, and outline next steps in the registration process. We look forward to sharing these opportunities with you and supporting students as they continue to grow as global learners. Form Programming Next Week

Next week in Form programming, students will explore their personal values, their role within different communities, and how they can support others. They will revisit the Community Agreements each grade created in the Fall and reflect on how they are upholding these commitments. This work not only supports students in setting values-based goals, but also deepens their understanding of how they contribute to and care for their community.

Senior School

Grade 11 Retreat Information

Our grade 11 retreat is the kick-off event for the Class of 2027, where they begin to examine their values and connect with each other. The retreat will offer a day of reflection, engaging discussions, and activities designed to support the students as they step into leadership roles within the school community. We are pleased to welcome Jules Porter as our keynote speaker. With over 20 years of global leadership experience, Jules has designed resilience-based programs for youth in more than 20 countries, ranging from the Arctic to international refugee camps. She is uniquely celebrated for her ability to use sport, play, and community-driven mentorship to help young women navigate complex challenges and build lasting confidence. At our retreat, Jules will be sharing personal stories about the many “versions” of herself and the core values that have guided her through every stage of her life and career.

Students are not required to wear uniforms. Our retreat will run from 8:30 am – 1:40 pm. Lunch and snacks will be provided. All students are expected to attend this event, especially those who are interested in leading at Havergal.

We look forward to a day that will help shape their journey as future graduates and leaders. Thank you for supporting this important event!

Friday, January 16, 2026

Yesterday, the world gave us a rare and beautiful gift: a forced pause. As I watched the snow cover our cars, our streets (and our driveways!), I was struck by how quickly the pace of life shifted.

Spending the day at home with my family was an unexpected joy, and it was wonderful to see neighbours stepping out to help one another. I kept thinking about our students and what a magical gift this day was for them. Whether they spent it playing in the snow, catching up on a bit of homework without the usual rush, or simply snuggling up to rest and reset, I hope they feel refreshed. For our students, who work so hard, these moments to breathe and be present are essential.

I’m grateful we all had the chance to slow down together.

Have a great weekend,

Deirdre
