Students can refer to the email their Form reps sent to them to identify the preferred cards for their family.

SENIOR SCHOOL

During this advisory session, two senior students will bravely share their personal stories to either the Grade 9/10 classes or Grade 11/12 classes, shedding light on some challenges they have faced, illuminating the ways they coped, and what it means to thrive. By fostering open conversations about wellbeing, we aim to build understanding, break down stigmas, and inspire empathy within our community.

Winter Athletics Information

Tryouts

  • Tryouts for winter athletics will start next week, Nov. 14 – 24. There are two methods of knowing the dates, times and locations of various tryouts:
  1. Look at THIS SCHEDULE – be sure you are on the “Winter 2023-2024” tab. Look for your age and sport.
  2. Veracross Household Calendar – located in the parent portal; all of your specific tryouts will be listed on this calendar.
  • If trying out for more than one team, athletes are asked to inform their coaches of their 1st and 2nd choices of winter team.

Season Schedule Commitments

  • Please ensure that your child can commit to the FULL season including CISAA playoffs and finals. Students must be able to commit to all practices and games. The schedule for the entire season is posted. Any conflicts should be communicated with the relevant coaches before final team selections are made.
  • Inability to commit to games and practices may affect team selection.

**Athletes should not commit to a team if they can’t actually commit to that team. Speak with individual coaches if there is potential for missing games/practices. Each team is different and has various rules about missing practices/games.**

Introducing #Winatsocial

#Winatsocial is a new program we are using as part of our Middle School Form Program, and the Digital Wisdom course.

Havergal has partnered with The Social Institute (TSI) to offer their #Winatsocial program that is designed to help students navigate their social world, including their use of social media and technology positively.

#Winatsocial is innovative, designed to equip students with the skills to navigate their wellbeing, social media, and technology in positive, high-character ways. While #Winatsocial will primarily be used in our Grade 7 and 8 Form Program, students will also engage with the program during their Digital Wisdom course. While engaging in this program, students will explore topics such as: “breaking down when to use text and when to talk,” or  “building a positive reputation on social media.” In a world where digital engagement plays a central role in students’ lives, #Winatsocial provides a proactive approach to promote student wellbeing, and foster a positive online culture inside and outside of our community.

#Winatsocial offers a holistic approach to ensure students thrive in the digital age. It’s not just about teaching responsible online behaviour but also cultivating empathy, resilience, and critical thinking. We firmly believe that equipping students with these skills will prepare them for a successful future. Moreover, this program goes beyond the classroom and offers resources to support parents and families, as well. Resources and articles will be shared with families later this Fall, and a brief introduction to the program will be offered during the November Grade Rep meeting, which all parents are invited to attend.

Partnering with The Social Institute and the #Winatsocial program is a step towards building a safer and more positive digital environment for our children.

Important Upper School Message

In Prayers on Thursday morning, Upper School students, faculty and staff gathered as a community to reflect and hold space to acknowledge those impacted by the terrorist attacks on Israel and the ensuing acts of violence in both Israel and Gaza. Ms. Norberg and Rev. Ruch shared that in times of profound tragedy and helplessness it is important to check in on one another, listen with compassion and engage in necessary self-care to remain grounded. We are mindful of the effect that disturbing imagery and commentary can have and, as such, we have suggested that students consider limiting their social media usage in the coming days. During these uncertain times, students may seek more information online; however, they were encouraged to reference reputable news sources and do their best to find moments to disconnect.

To help your child maintain a balance between staying informed and minimizing stress, consider asking them some of the following questions:

  • What are you seeing on your social media feeds?
  • Do you have any questions about what you’re seeing?
  • How are you feeling about what you’re seeing?
  • How do you know if what you’re reading and seeing is from a reliable source?
  • Are there social media accounts that might be best to unfollow right now?

Over the course of the week we have connected with students and faculty both individually and collectively. In particular, our Jewish Student Affinity faculty leads held space for students during each lunch period this week. In Form and TA, Grade 10 students talked about allyship as a key element of community building, care and connection.

Prayers Special Speaker: Madame Gandhi

On Monday, September 25, we will have a special speaker in Prayers: musician and activist, Madame Gandhi. The occasion is to mark the beginning of Gender Equality Week which is celebrated the last week of September in Canada. The theme this year is United for Gender Equality: Stronger Together.

Madame Gandhi’s mission is to use music as a medium for a message about positivity, personal expression and human thriving. She is an award-winning artist and activist known for her uplifting, percussive electronic music and positive message about gender liberation and personal power. She has been listed as Forbes 30 Under 30 in Music and BBC 100 Women, and her mainstage TED Talk about conscious music consumption has been viewed over a million times. “Waiting For Me,” shot in Mumbai, India, which focuses on radical expressions of joy, colour and freedom and won the Music Video Jury Award at SXSW Film Festival in 2021. In June of 2022, Madame Gandhi completed a Masters in Music Science & Technology at Stanford University’s CCRMA where she spent time in Antarctica sampling the sounds of glaciers melting to create empathy and awareness around climate change. Madame Gandhi actively collaborates with other female and gender-expansive people in the industry. Her song The Future is Female” was featured as the theme song for the 2022 Apple TV+ docu series “Gutsy” about the world’s boldest and bravest women. In June 2023, she was awarded the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Abe Olman Prize for excellence in songwriting and leadership.

Brown, Dartmouth, Northwestern & Vanderbilt Information Session

Brown, Dartmouth, Northwestern Universities and Vanderbilt College have selected Havergal College as the location of their Toronto information session. They will be on campus this coming Monday, September 25  to host the information session from 7 to 8:30 pm in the Brenda Robson Hall. This is the only day these universities were able to hold their Toronto event within a much larger Canadian tour, which we recognize is unfortunate timing for those community members who are observing Yom Kippur. To ensure everyone has an opportunity to gather information from this session, we have arranged for the event to be recorded. We will let you know when the recording is available on the Guidance Veracross Portal for those who are interested and unable to attend in-person.

All Havergal Grade 9 to 12 students and families are welcome to attend. Please note, this event is open to all senior school students across the Greater Toronto Area, not just students from Havergal. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to hear directly from admission officers and for our guidance team to continue to forge strong partnerships with U.S. colleges. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s guidance counsellor directly and we would be happy to assist you.

Forum for Change: Truth & Reconciliation Council Half-Day Workshops for Upper School

Havergal students will be participating in the TRC Assembly on the 28th of September, as well as in the September 29th TRC half-day of workshops and learning experiences that have been organised by the Truth and Reconciliation Student Council.

On the 28th, there will be prayers in the morning to acknowledge the intergenerational impacts of residential schools and further education surrounding Indigenous peoples. We will hear from the members of TRC, all while looking into not only the past but the future.

The 29th will be Orange Shirt Day, where students attend school wearing an orange shirt to promote the awareness of the survivors of residential schools. The TRC Committee will be providing the opportunity to buy an orange shirt that Havergal has purchased from indigenous creators (NB supplies are limited).

September 29th will also be a half day of classes, where in the morning students will take part in various workshops and activities. Some of these include craft workshops with Indigenous creator Catherine Tamarro, discussions with guest speaker Riley Yesno, Lacrosse workshops with Rama community stick maker Joe Valiere, and more.

The TRC is committed to spreading awareness and knowledge to the Havergal community through celebrating Indigenous individuality and progress during this week, while also reconciling with the trauma of our shared past.
