A Message from the Heads: Cissy Goodridge & Deirdre Timusk

Dear Parents and Students

We can hardly believe it ourselves, but this is our last message for the year! Please mark your calendars to remind you to check for the summer mailings. The first one will arrive on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, containing information about ordering books for the fall. The second mailing, on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, will be filled with lots of reminders and important links for you.

As the academic year draws to a close, it’s a bittersweet time filled with celebrations and goodbyes. We recently honored our graduating rowers at their banquet and saw the Class of 2025 pass the torch to the Class of 2026 at our 90th Candlelight Ceremony. Our boarding students are moving out this week, some off to new university adventures. This week culminates with our graduation ceremony, where we’ll celebrate the incredible Class of 2025 with their families on Ratcliffe Field.

As our Class of 2025 graduation speaker, Sarah M, eloquently said: “So, go be brilliant. Be bold. Be driven. Be relentless in your pursuit of justice. But don’t forget to be kind. Be open. And be present. Never forget about compassion as the force that gives us meaning.”

With that inspirational message, we wish you a wonderful summer. Thank you for your unwavering support this year; we’re so proud of our students and feel so lucky to be part of this great community.

Report Cards available Wednesday, June 18 

Report cards will be available online at 9 am on Wednesday, June 18. 

How to Access Student Files:

  1. Sign into the Veracross Parent Portal
  2. In the upper left, select My Children, then select Student Files under the child you wish to view

In the Files section, select Download next to the file you wish to view.

Safety Reminder for Families

As we head into the summer, we wanted to share some resources with families to help support safety. A few Toronto schools have shared that there were incidents of students in their communities being approached. In each incident students sought support appropriately and reached out to their schools. 

Student safety is always our highest priority. Whether students are walking to school, taking transit, or spending time off campus during lunch or after school, it’s important they feel confident in how to respond if something doesn’t feel right.

Please also remind your child that our school security team is always available to help. They can be reached by calling the main school number: 416-483-3519. We encourage students to save this number in their phones.

Green & Gold Closes Today & Will Reopen Wednesday, August 6

The Green & Shop is closed for summer holidays on Friday, June 13 and reopen on Wednesday, August 6. It will also be closed on Friday, August 29.

Preparing for 2025-26 School Year 

“Back to School” information for the 2025-2026 school year will be communicated to families in two summer messages. The first message will be sent by email on Wednesday July 2 and the second message on Wednesday August 20.

Dear Parents and Students

Our final week of Middle School was packed! Our Grade 7 students enjoyed a field trip to Black Creek Pioneer Village, organized by the Social Science department. In our final stage of service learning, we welcomed Joesphine Sandini, of JS Group to speak to our Grade 8 students about her journey from being a North York Harvest Food Bank recipient, to owning her own construction company. The students learned about programs and services that go beyond food donations and they were eager to recommit their service to this important organization. We ended the week on a high note with Celebrate Grade 8, a special event dedicated to recognizing our Grade 8 students’ talents and achievements.

As we look forward to next week’s events, including Graduation, Candlelight, and the Rowing Banquet, we know many of you are also starting to plan for the summer. With that in mind, we highly recommend listening to Dr. Lisa Damour’s podcast, “The Summer of Building Independence” In this episode, Dr. Lisa explores strategies to empower kids with life skills, from doing laundry to riding public transportation to managing personal appointments. If you are tired of doing everything for your kids, then give this episode a listen!

2025-2026 Athletics Schedule

The athletic schedule for 2025-2026 is now posted. Please save this doc as it is always the most up to date sports schedule and please note that this schedule always has the potential to change.

On that note…please return your athletic uniform!

Please return all athletic uniforms to Ms. D in the HPE office. Replacement charges will be placed this week. We would prefer to have the uniforms returned. Thank you for your support.

Exam Viewing–Optional Opportunity for Students, Friday, June 20, 8 – 10:30 am 

  • Learning opportunities related to term assessment are rich and plentiful throughout every course, whereas the primary purpose of final assessment–scheduled at the end of the period of learning–is to summarize and convey what students know and can do with respect to the course’s overall curriculum expectations. 
  • Final assessments–including exams–sometimes raise questions for students about their next steps on a multi-year learning journey. For this reason and in such cases, Havergal invites students to visit campus to review their exam(s) on a drop-in basis on Friday, June 20, from 8–10:30 am.
  • This optional opportunity will offer students the chance to see their exam; it is not an opportunity to ask for their mark to be changed. Should the teacher or student uncover any numerical exam errors, these will be referred to the Director of Academic Operations for resolution.
  • Students interested in exam viewing can find the location for drop-in (Friday, June 20th, 8-10:30 am) for each of their courses/exams here.

Please Return Your Library Items! 

Please note that all Upper and Middle School students have been reminded that library items — including laptops — were due back at the end of May. Once a student’s account is cleared, they are welcome to borrow books for the summer. We also invite both students and families to explore Sora, our digital reading app, which offers eBooks, audiobooks, and now access to over 500 magazines.

Please be aware that unreturned items are subject to replacement costs, as outlined in the Havergal Library’s Book Borrowing Procedure. Any items not returned by June 20 will be charged to your child’s school account. No refunds will be issued after this date. If the item is found later, you are welcome to keep it or donate it back to the library.

The CI Tracker website is currently closed for maintenance as we work on creating a new and improved process. The new system will be ready and launched in the fall when students return from summer break.

Middle School Exams are on Monday, June 9 and Tuesday, June 10

  • The full exam schedule is here.
  • All Middle School exams are 90 minutes in duration, with start times at 9:00 am for morning exams and 1:00 pm for afternoon exams. 
  • Standard time exams will all take place in the Double Gym, and students with accommodations will write all of their exams in B65/B66.
  • If your child is ill on the day of the exam, please report their absence on the Parent Portal as you would on a regular school day.
  • Calculator Check: As hundreds of students are writing exams at the same time we ask that you double check with your daughter that she has her own calculator. She will not be able to borrow one from the Math Department for her exam.
  • Students should wear their regular uniform to exams and ensure they bring their swipe card.

Update your daughter’s health records – Due July 1

It is that time of year when the Health Centre requires you to renew and update health information. You will receive an email prompting you to log in to Magnus (Havergal’s Medical Information System) on June 1st. You must log in even if no health information has changed.As a reminder, per Havergal College’s Conditions of Enrolment, your child’s immunization record must be up to date and submitted to Toronto Public Health Immunization Connect Ontario website.

Grade 11/12 Parents – Graduation & End of the Year Information

Thursday, June 12

  • No Uniform Required
  • Rehearsal for Candlelight Ceremony: Grade 11 & 12 students will meet in the BRH at 11:30 am – 12:30 pm Graduation Rehearsal: Grads meet in the BRH at 1 – 2 pm.
  • Candlelight Ceremony (Students Only): Students should arrive by 5:45 pm and meet in their assigned classrooms. Students are dressed in an all-white outfit.

Friday, June 13 – Graduation Day 

8 – 10 am – Grads pick up their cap & gown in the Drama Studio. Grad class will gather in the BRH for a light breakfast and to pick up their flowers from the school. Grad class will gather in the BRH for a class photograph on the stage (9 am). 

10 am  – Graduation Ceremony
12:30 pm (approx) Graduation Reception in the Athletic Centre.While there is no limit to the number of guests each family may bring, each family has one parking pass that was mailed to them with the invitation. A Message from the Heads: Cissy Goodridge & Deirdre Timusk

Dear Parents and Students

Even as some of our students prepare for their next adventures, we remain committed to creating the bonds that make our school so special. The events that take place in the last few weeks of school build lasting memories for students who are leaving as well as those who remain behind. 

This week, we saw an example of this commitment with our Teddy Bear & Friends Picnic, where our SK and JK students shared a popsicle and their favourite stuffie with the Grade 12s. This tradition shows how we connect our youngest learners with our graduating class, fostering a sense of belonging. If you haven’t already, please do check out the absolute cuteness on our Instagram page! This event took place after the Grads had already been up since dawn watching the sun rise as a graduating class and then went to Grad Prayers for a final goodbye to the school as a class. It was a big, busy day with a lot of crying! 

The community building was also evident in our House program. The school celebrated as the House Shout award went to EK House and, for the second consecutive year, the overall House Banner going to CS. We’re so proud of all our House Captains; their collaborative spirit and dedication have been instrumental in building the strong House community that’s at the heart of the Havergal experience.

Finally, we were moved by Dr. Samson’s inspiring words on the power of gratitude and its role in our sustained well-being. She shared her appreciation for each grade’s unique contributions, highlighting how every grade and student help make Havergal such a special place. And, it was a true honour to present this year’s Mason Medal to Victoria G., recognizing her remarkable ability to connect with so many students, her thoughtful nature, and her unwavering dedication to our school community.

Student Health Updates for the 25-26 School Year

It is that time of year when the Health Centre requires you to renew and update health information for your child if they are returning to Havergal in the fall.

Health information is collected for all students to support their safety, health, and wellbeing during their time at Havergal for any related activities.

You will receive an email prompting you to log in to Magnus (Havergal’s Medical Information System) the week of June 1st. You must log in even if no health information has changed to confirm the information we have is still correct and answer any new questions. 

When you log in, you may see that some of your responses appear to be out of compliance. The non-compliance message is for the 2025-26 school year. You will see that your current year’s responses are valid until July 1, 2025:

Locker Clean Out – Thursday, June 4 at 3:15 pm

Please encourage your daughter to begin to bring items in her locker home this week. 

She may keep her lock on her locker to put valuable items during exams but everything else must be removed by June 6 at 1:30pm.. All locks must be removed by the end of the day on June 11 3:30pm.

In Form this week

Our final week in Middle School will be a busy one. On Monday the students should arrive at the morning program with the necessary items to study for their math and science exams. Teachers will be available to help them with any questions that they may have. 

The week will continue with their Form breakfast on Tuesday and students are encouraged to bring in a treat to share. On Wednesday our grade 8’s will have the opportunity to hear from Joe Sanini who will share her story of being a North York Harvest Food Bank recipient to CEO of her own construction company the JS Group – an inspiring story of resilience and success.

The week concludes with two assemblies that honour the achievements of our Middle School students. On Thursday our students will be honoured for their leadership contributions throughout the year and on Friday, we will say farewell to our Grade 8 class as we celebrate their time in the Middle School.

SENIOR SCHOOL

Graduation & End of the Year Information

We are looking forward to celebrating the Class of 2025. Below is an outline of key information for Graduation and the End of the Year.

Thursday, June 12

  • No Uniform Required
  • Rehearsal for Candlelight Ceremony: Grade 11 & 12 students will meet in the BRH at 11:30 am – 12:30 pm to rehearse for Candlelight.
  • NEW! Pizza Lunch – provided 12:30 pm 
  • Graduation Rehearsal: Grads meet in the BRH at 1 – 2 pm.
  • Candlelight Ceremony (Students Only): Students should arrive by 5:45 pm and meet in their assigned classrooms. Students are dressed in an all-white outfit.

Friday, June 13 – Graduation Day 

8 – 8:15 am

8:15 – 9 am

  • Students should arrive 15 minutes early for each exam, in their regular school uniform.
  • From June 2–11, students are not required to be at school except for the period of time when their exam is being written. 
  • If your child is ill on the day of the exam, please report their absence on the Parent Portal as you would on a regular school day.
    • Please note that a final summative evaluation is required to complete each Senior School course. Medical documentation must be provided for any exam absence and the exam must be made up  at another time and place. Contact Jennifer Goldberg, Director of Academic Operations, for more information.

Spring Sports Uniforms

Please return all spring sports uniforms (or uniforms from other seasons) this week. Uniforms can be returned to Ms. Di Filippo in the HPE Office. Unreturned or misplaced uniforms will result in a replacement fee. 

Grade 8 Parents: Registration for Camp New Moon! 

With over 20 new grade 9 students arriving in September the Class of 2029 will travel to Camp New Moon to take part in community building activities. This will take place from Wednesday, Sept 10 – Friday, Sept 12. Please register for camp by Monday, June 9.

Band Instrument Return  

This is a reminder that all Band instruments, books and folders need to be returned to the school no later than June 7th.  This includes any home instruments such as tubas, bell kits, drumsticks and mallets.  If your child wishes to keep their instrument over the summer please have them speak to their Band teacher, and if they are currently enrolled in a Band class they can return these items during their classes.

All graduating students need to ensure that they have returned all items to the Band room and if applicable, picked up their personal instruments before they leave campus.

A Message from the Heads: Cissy Goodridge & Deirdre Timusk

Dear Parents and Students

This week, we were reminded of the richness of our school spirit through three events that celebrated artistry, memory, and community.

On Monday afternoon, the Legacy Theatre was transformed by the 2025 Dance Troupe Urban Contemporary Showcase – CTRL. Seventeen breathtaking pieces, choreographed with precision and performed with passion, captivated an enthusiastic audience. Fifteen dancers performed expertly for nearly an hour, showcasing both technical excellence and emotional depth. Special thanks to Dance Heads Sophie and Vicky, and to staff coordinator Kiana, for guiding the dancers in creating such a powerful experience.

On Tuesday, we gathered to honour another Havergal tradition as our Marguerites, the longest-serving students, took the stage to share stories from their earliest days at school. Their reflections offered moments of humour, nostalgia, and insight into the journey of learning and growing up at Havergal. The morning concluded with the always-moving Siblings section of the Prayers program, where students expressed love and gratitude for their siblings in the school community—leaving few dry eyes in the house.

Finally, our week of celebration culminated in the annual House Shout—a wonderful display of energy and House pride. Not even the relentless spring rain could dampen our spirits as students sang their hearts out reminding us of the deep connections and camaraderie that define our House system.

Together, these events reflect the heart of our School and their unshakable sense of community.

Locker Clean Out – Thursday, May 29 at 3:15 pm

Please encourage your daughter to begin to bring items in her locker home this week. 

She may keep her lock on her locker to put valuable items during exams but everything else must be removed by May 30. All locks must be removed by Friday, June 13.

Grade 9-12 Study Day: Friday, May 30 

In anticipation of Senior School exams (June 2–11), Friday, May 30th is Grade 9-12 Study Day. No Senior School classes will be in session on this day, allowing students time–in addition to their in-class preparation sessions–to study for exams. Senior School students are encouraged to communicate with their teachers to access on-campus exam preparation support on this day, and are also welcome to study at home.

Grade 9-12 Exams begin Monday, June 2 

  • Exams for Grade 9-12 courses begin on Monday, June 2. The full schedule is here.
  • All Senior School exams are two hours in duration, with start times at 9:00 am for morning exams and 1:00 pm for afternoon exams. 
  • Standard time exams will all take place in the Double Gym, and students with accommodations will write all of their exams in B65/B66.
  • Students should arrive 15 minutes early for each exam, in their regular school uniform.
  • From June 2–11, students are not required to be at school except for the period of time when their exam is being written. 
  • If your child is ill on the day of the exam, please report their absence on the Parent Portal as you would on a regular school day.
    • Please note that a final summative evaluation is required to complete each Senior School course. Medical documentation must be provided for any exam absence and the exam must be made up  at another time and place. Contact Jennifer Goldberg, Director of Academic Operations, for more information.
  • Calculator Check: As hundreds of students are writing exams at the same time we ask that you double check with your daughter that she has her own calculator. She will not be able to borrow one from the Math Department for her exam.

Grade 11 Parents: Core Strengths Program This Fall 

One of the cornerstones of the leadership training we are providing to all Grade 12 students this year is the Core Strengths program. Used in hundreds of workplaces to help develop leaders and build relationship intelligence, the award winning Core Strengths program will provide our graduates with self-knowledge, skills and strategies to be high achieving, confident and effective leaders in their futures.

The Core Strengths assessment fees are $110 per student and will be billed to student accounts. The program implementation will begin the first week of school and run through the year and will be led by Havergal employees who have become certified Core Strengths facilitators. Dear Parents and Students

This week our Middle School took center stage. Today we were delighted by Grade 8 dancers: Alina, Chloe, Angela, Coco and Jessie, who performed a piece featuring intricate choreography set to a J-Pop song as part of the Asian Heritage Prayers. Later in the week, our Middle School students were immersed in experiential learning that truly brought concepts to life. One impactful initiative saw our students create a mock food bank. Through this hands-on experience of sorting, collecting, and packing food, they gained a deeper understanding of food insecurity and the vital role of community support. It was inspiring to witness their empathy and proactive approach to learning about and addressing this important issue.

Beyond the classroom, the enthusiasm and dedication of our students was also celebrated through a variety of awards this week. From Math and DECA to Global Learning and Leading Diplomas, and the anticipation of the Herbert Mason vote, these achievements highlight the diverse passions and talents our students cultivate outside of their regular studies. These experiences, much like the mock food bank, offer invaluable opportunities for growth, skill development, and the chance to explore their interests in meaningful ways.

These initiatives and achievements truly reflect our commitment to fostering well-rounded individuals who are not only academically strong but also deeply connected to their community and eager to make a positive impact.

Last week in the Middle School

This past week we transformed our BRH into a North York Harvest Food Bank sorting room. All 118 Grade 8 students participated in weighing, sorting and packing the donations while the grade 7’s created a 121 person human chain to transport the food from the JS to the BRH. During the hour long activity students were engaged, having fun and learned how thousands of pounds of food gets organized and distributed to our community partners. Get ready for House Shout

Next week the entire school will participate in our annual House Shout. Students have been preparing their cheers and will compete for the coveted House Banner on Friday, students will come to school dressed from head to toe in their house colours ready to compete. Working Together: Responsible Parking in Our Community

There have been some concerns raised by our neighbours regarding student parking on side streets. We have received reports of students parking in a manner that has, at times, impeded garbage pickup and, according to residents, has become more frequent and for longer durations.

We kindly request that you speak with your children about the importance of responsible parking. Please emphasize the need to:

  • Avoid blocking driveways at all times.
  • Ensure garbage and recycling collection routes are clear.
  • Strictly adhere to all posted parking signs in the area.

We value our relationship with our surrounding community and want to ensure we are being respectful neighbours. Your cooperation in addressing this matter is greatly appreciated.

Dear Parents and Students,

This week’s morning programming buzzed with opportunities for our students to embody some of our key leadership attributes. Pride Week took centre stage, fostering an inclusive environment through student-led activities designed to build connection and belonging. Witnessing the Class of 2025 and 2026 collaborate in preparation for the Candlelight ceremony was a powerful example of empowering others, as the graduating class prepares to pass the torch of leadership.

Our Admission Prefects, Tessa and Isabella, demonstrated caring leadership by inviting grade 10 students to apply for a new mentoring program. This initiative will pair older students with incoming grade 9s, providing invaluable support and guidance over their first two years at Havergal.

The Guidance team also played a crucial role, meeting with grade 9 students to address their questions and dispel myths about post-secondary pathways, emphasizing the value of a well-rounded high school experience. Meanwhile, our middle school students actively engaged in our win@social program, discussing how friendships can shift and change and what steps they can take to demonstrate belonging, within our community. This week truly showcased our students actively living our leadership attributes.

Bring your sunscreen

As the weather warms up, please ensure your child comes to school with sunscreen already applied and, if possible, brings their own for reapplication. Students are often outside beyond PE—at lunch, during breaks, and for class activities—and we’ve noticed many do not have sunscreen with them. Thank you for helping us keep everyone sun-safe!

The Sorting Room

This week in the Middle School our students will transform the BRH to replicate the North York Harvest Food Bank sorting room. Our students will weigh, count and box thousands of canned goods for our community partner. This marks the final step in a months-long project where our students have engaged in community outreach to positively impact the lives of others

Math Contest Reminder

The Gauss math contest is taking place during morning programming for all MS students on Wednesday, 14th May. MS students are encouraged to arrive at school no later than 8:20, to allow for a seamless start to the contest. Thank you for your flexibility and support in getting your child to school a little early that day.

MS Immunization Clinic

On Thursday May 15, our Grade 7 students will be participating in the TPH Immunization clinic. Students who received their first does in the Fall will receive their second dose on Thursday.  Students who were ill or missed the first dose, are able to receive it at the clinic. A completed and signed consent form must accompany the child to the clinic. A copy of the consent form can be found HERE.

Next Week in Morning Programming 

Looking ahead, our morning programming for the next few weeks will be dedicated to preparing for the House Shout. For those unfamiliar, this vibrant event, showcased in this video, involves each House creating a cheer and routine. It also marks the culmination of the House Banner competition. With the possibility of winning the House Banner still very much alive for everyone, full participation is key!

Consequently, this week marks our final grade-level program meeting. Our dedicated student grade representatives from grades 9 to 11 have designed engaging programming for their peers to celebrate the approaching end of the school year. Meanwhile, our graduating class will have a special session focused on all things Graduation, including essential information about the ceremony and their important role within it.

A Message from the Heads: Cissy Goodridge & Deirdre Timusk

Dear Parents and Students

This week we had some significant events take place off campus. The first found our students in Florida for 5 days at ICDC – the International Career Development Conference in Orlando.  Over 25000 students worldwide came together to participate in a business case competition.   We had 12 students qualify to attend the conference, including Angela L, Shuyue L, Megan P, Emily Z, Kiana K, Claire H, Ani T, Helen C, Emma W, Victoria L,tLauren S. and Samantha Z. They worked incredibly hard, studying for their exams, practicing role plays and supporting each other. Samantha Z received a top 10 medal, and Ani T made it to top 20. 

We couldn’t be prouder of the dedication and effort our students have shown as members of HC DECA.

In addition, students taking Grade 12 Canadian and International Politics traveled to Ottawa. They toured the Senate, meeting with two clerks to discuss the role of committees in both the House of Commons and the Senate. In the afternoon, they toured the West Block, seeing the House of Commons, before meeting Kate Harrison, Vice-Chair of Summa Strategies, and Oksana Kishchuk, Director of Strategy and Insights at Abacus Data, to uncover the role of strategy and public relations firms. They finished the day meeting with Chris Hall, Managing Principal at Navigator Ltd. to chat about the outcomes of the federal election, before touring CBC’s Ottawa Bureau and being a guest audience for David Cochrane’s Power and Politics. It was a very busy day, learning about the various careers and facets of life on the Hill.

On Thursday evening, over 340 Havergal students, alongside faculty and staff, participated in the 7th Annual COSSOT Relay for Life—an inspiring event that raises awareness and funds for the fight against cancer. Thanks to the incredible dedication of more than 20 student organizers and the unwavering support of our community, we raised over $205,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Despite the rain, student spirits remained high as we pivoted indoors and continued with moving tributes, including a luminous ceremony honouring those affected by cancer. A powerful speech from a Grade 10 student, bravely sharing her personal experience with cancer, reminded us all why this cause matters so deeply.

We are thrilled to share that, with this year’s contributions, COSSOT Relay for Life has now raised over $1 million in just six years—a monumental achievement made possible by our students, families, and wider school community.Thank you for your generous support of this event. By centering student voice and highlighting the beauty of diversity, we continue to nurture a school community where every student can be proud of who they are and know without a doubt that they belong.

Parents As Speakers: An Invitation to Share your Knowledge and Skills with Havergal Students 

We’re excited to invite you to volunteer for a new initiative, “Parents As Speakers”, at Havergal College. This initiative aims to build stronger connections at HC by creating meaningful opportunities for parents to share their stories, talents, and experiences in ways that can directly enrich our students’ lives.

Whether it’s by volunteering to offer career insights, speak at Prayers, engage in informal student discussions, or participate in creative formats like our Human Library, your involvement can make a real impact.If you’re interested in volunteering, we invite you to express your interest by completing the Google Form HERE. MS Spring Music Night 2025

Grade 7 Immunization Clinic

Grade 7 students who received their immunizations in the Fall will be receiving their second immunizations on May 15th. Students who missed their first dose can receive it during the clinic. Only those who have not yet received their first dose need to submit a completed consent form which can be found  HERE.

BSS Social

Bishop Strachan will be hosting a social event on Friday May 9th. Interested students have signed up for the event and parents will be notified on Monday. The registration must be completed by Tuesday May 6, at 8pm.

You may hear your daughter talking about a spring semi-formal planned for May 23 at a venue on College Street. Please note that this is not a Havergal-sanctioned event and is not affiliated with the school in any way. 

Next Week in Morning Programming 

Our Grade 11 and 12 students are beginning the process of “passing the torch” of leadership from the Class of 2025 to the Class of 2026. As part of this tradition, this week students will begin to learn the songs and customs associated with our beloved Candlelight Ceremony, which will take place on June 12.

Meanwhile, our Grade 10 students are reflecting on their year together and writing “warm fuzzies” — thoughtful notes of appreciation — to strengthen the sense of connection and community within their grade.

Our Grade 9s will spend time with our Guidance team this week, engaging in programming designed to support their academic and personal growth as they finish their first year of Senior School.

Round Square Experience: South Africa June 2026

This experience will provide an incredible opportunity for students to experience South Africa through the Round Square I.D.E.A.L.S. During this experience, students will deep-dive into Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism and Service.

Students will learn about environmentalism at the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, where they will search for the Big Five on game drives and safari experiences. After a few days of outdoor adventure, students will head to our Round Square partner school Tiger Kloof, where we will learn more about this highly regarded educational institution and engage in service learning through giving back to the local community. Finally, our time in Cape Town will be spent learning about South Africa’s rich and difficult history. As we explore different neighborhoods and historical sites we will learn more about the history and legacy of apartheid, the important work and experiences of figures like Nelson Mandela, as well as the vibrant and diverse cultural heritage of South Africa.

Dear Parents and Students

Tuesday marked a truly special moment in the Havergal calendar as we celebrated Founders’ Day, commemorating the laying of the cornerstone of our Upper School on Avenue Road. It’s the one day each year when our entire community—students from Grades 1 to 12, faculty, staff, families, and Old Girls—gathers at St. Paul’s Church for a meaningful service. Led by Reverend Jillian Ruch, the celebration featured beautiful performances by all four school choirs and inspiring reflections on tradition and change from Dr. Samson, Old Girl Dr. Mary Grant (Class of 2001), and Grade 12 student Suri Li.  To view photos from our Founders’ Day event, please click HERE.

Later in the week, our community turned its focus to Earth Week, with a variety of thoughtful activities organized by the Forum for Change Council. Highlights included a Hunger Banquet to deepen understanding of poverty and food insecurity in Toronto, as well as guest speakers Judy Reda from North York Harvest Food Bank and Josephine Sindani, who shared her powerful journey from food bank client to successful business owner. It was a week rich in learning, reflection, and meaningful action as students explored how to care for both people and the planet.

Also this week, the Social Sciences department hosted its 13th annual interdisciplinary evening for Grade 12 students, examining the role of social sciences in understanding world events such as the Rwandan genocide. The evening featured thoughtful discussions and insights from special guests Associate Professor Ira Wells (Victoria College, UT) and former ICC Deputy Prosecutor James K. Stewart.

Finally, our senior student art exhibit continues this week, running from April 24 to 27 at the Northern Contemporary Gallery in Roncesvalles—a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their creativity in a professional gallery setting. If you are in the neighbourhood, we hope that you will drop by.

Announcement: Kate Crokam as Executive Director, Advancement

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Kate Crokam as Executive Director, Advancement, effective May 1, 2025.

A seasoned advancement leader with more than 15 years of experience in the independent school sector, Kate brings a proven track record of building strong donor relationships, fostering community engagement and leading strategic philanthropic and alumni engagement initiatives. She has held key roles at Upper Canada College, The Bishop Strachan School, and most recently at Havergal, where she has served as Director of Advancement (interim) and Director of Alumni Engagement since 2022.

Kate is a passionate advocate for girls’ education, having worked at two independent girls’ schools. In addition, she is a parent of two independent school graduates, a perspective that enables her to bring a deep understanding of the independent school community, as well as a strong personal commitment to Havergal’s values. Her thoughtful leadership, authentic relationship-building and results-oriented approach have already made a significant impact within the Advancement team and broader school community.

In her new role, Kate will lead Havergal’s Advancement team efforts, shaping a bold and sustainable future through strategic fundraising and engagement. We are excited for her continued leadership as we work together to inspire generosity and deepen connections within our vibrant Havergal network.

Next week in the Middle School

On Tuesday April 29, we will welcome Judy Reda the Community and Corporate Fundraising Manager from the North York Harvest Food Bank to the Middle School. Judy will share her experience working with the organization and where the food that gets donated goes. Judy will return on May 13th, as we turn our Brenda Robson Hall into a sorting centre and the students will sort the food that we raised in our recent canned food drive. As a reminder, our community is in desperate need of canned meat and seafood and we are asking our students to consider bringing in a can of tuna or salmon to augment our food drive.

On Wednesday, the excitement continues within our House system as we launch our House Shout practice season with an engaging kick-off assembly. Students will have the opportunity to view examples of past House Shouts to help them get pumped up for this exciting annual House event!

Global Learning Project: Japan March 2026

We are excited to share an upcoming student travel opportunity to Japan that will immerse students in the vibrant contrasts between tradition and modernity. From the bustling cityscape of Tokyo to the tranquil surroundings of Mount Fuji, this trip offers a unique chance to explore how cultural heritage and innovation coexist in contemporary Japanese society. To provide students with more information about the trip, we will be hosting a lunch and learn session on May 1 at 12:15pm. We encourage students who are interested in travel, global learning, and cultural exploration to attend. The session will outline trip highlights, learning goals, and the application process.

Explore Language, Culture, and History on an Immersive Trip to Guadeloupe in March 2026

This Global Experience to Guadeloupe brings the French language to life through an unforgettable cultural experience. This immersive journey will allow students to explore the dynamic blend of African, European, and Caribbean influences that define Guadeloupean identity, all while deepening their French language skills.

From lively local markets to scenic coastal adventures, this 8-day trip offers a rich tapestry of experiences. Students will participate in Creole language and cooking classes, engage in workshops on traditional music, dance, and clothing, and explore the complex history of slavery and colonialism with a powerful visit to the Memorial ACTe museum. Next Week in Morning Programming

Next week offers a blend of community building and academic preparation for our Senior School students. Our Grade 9 and 10 students will participate in games thoughtfully designed by their Grade Representatives. These student-led activities aim to foster a strong sense of community and belonging, which we recognize as fundamental to a positive learning environment.

Our Grade 11 students will focus on developing essential exam preparation strategies in a dedicated session with our Learning Strategies teacher, Ms. Blore. This targeted support will equip them with the skills necessary for success in their upcoming assessments.

Our graduating students will benefit from an insightful presentation by the University of Waterloo’s Arts-History Undergraduate Chair. This session will provide invaluable guidance on maximizing success in the university setting. Key topics will include effectively utilizing academic resources such as Teaching Assistants, faculty office hours, the Student Success Office, and the Writing Centre, alongside practical strategies for active classroom engagement. This is an excellent opportunity for our graduating class to gain practical tips for a smooth and successful transition to university.

A Message from the Heads: Cissy Goodridge & Deirdre Timusk

Dear Parents and Students,

This week has been rich with moments that speak to the strength of our student body and the values we hold dear at Havergal.

We began the week with speeches from our five exceptional School Captain candidates, each one offering thoughtful reflections on leadership, community, and what it means to serve others. They were joined by many other students vying for leadership roles across the school. The sheer number of students who put themselves forward is a testament to their deep engagement in school life and their desire to give back. Their words were personal, inspiring, and marked by a genuine commitment to making Havergal an even better place for their peers.

On Wednesday, we celebrated the achievements of over 50 Grade 12 students at our Arts Awards Assembly. These young people have shaped our community through music, drama, dance, and visual art—and their contributions over the years have brought both beauty and meaning to our shared life at the school. The ceremony featured several moving performances that captured the spirit of the occasion and reminded us of the powerful role the arts play in building community.

Finally, our Easter Prayers asked a simple but profound question: “What does Easter mean to you?” We heard from a student, a teacher, and our Chaplain, each of whom spoke with honesty and grace about how their faith shapes their lives. It was a reflective and heartfelt service that invited us all—regardless of belief or background—to consider the role of hope, renewal, and compassion in our own lives.

Relay for Life Is Back! Thursday May 1

We are excited to announce that Havergal, UCC and Crescent are working together to lead the COSSOT Relay for Life on May 1 from 4:30 – 9:00 p.m. at the Upper Canada College Oval. This event, which last year raised over $300,000 to fight cancer, gathers more than 1000 students, staff and parent reps from COSSOT schools to share their commitment to support cancer research and those living with the disease that affects so many of us. Our goal is to end cancer in our students’ lifetime. 

Your child may be asking for your support to sign up for Relay, which requires a credit card to pay the $20 registration fee (all of which goes to our fundraising total) and to support their fundraising efforts.

Here’s what you or your daughter can expect at the event: 

  1. You have one member of your team running or walking at all times for the Relay time (4 hours)
  2. An opportunity to make a dedication to someone you are relaying for – someone who has been affected by cancer. 
  3. A lot of games and food – volleyball, mechanical bull, live music, spikeball, basketball, facepaint, an ice cream truck, and much more.

Grade 12 Art + Design Exhibition at Northern Contemporary Gallery, Thursday, April 24, 6-8 pm

Please join us for the exciting opening of this year’s Grade 12 Art + Design exhibition at Northern Contemporary Gallery, Thursday April 24th from 6 to 8pm.  Northern Contemporary is at 420 Roncesvalles Avenue, just south of Bloor St.  The exhibition runs from April 22 to April 27.  Hours are Tuesday to Sunday noon to 6pm.  We would love to see you at the opening to enjoy the work of our remarkable grade 12’s.

Earth Week is here!

Havergal’s Forum for Change Council (F4C) has put together an exciting week of activities to celebrate our planet and raise awareness about sustainability! Each event connects to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and students will have the chance to learn, participate, and make a difference—all while having fun. Students can participate in Earth Week Bingo for a chance to win House Points! 

Parent Challenge: Join your child in completing the Earth Week Bingo tasks at home! It’s a fun way to model sustainable living and support your child’s efforts! Here’s what’s happening: Earth Week April 22 – 25, 2025

Tuesday will be #1 Dress!

A quick and cheerful reminder as we look ahead to next week: on Tuesday, our students will be attending the Founders’ Day Service at St. Paul’s. While we’ve sent out several reminders and posted notices around the school, it’s easy to slip into routine—so we’d be grateful if you could help us with one more nudge at home. Please remind your daughters to wear their #1 Dress uniform on Tuesday. We want every student to feel proud and polished as we come together for this special Havergal tradition.

Next week during Form, students will take part in an interactive stress management session led by our guidance team. During the session, students will explore the importance of sleep, healthy eating, and practical strategies for managing stress. With end-of-year assessments approaching, this session will be especially helpful.

In Morning Programming Next Week

Next week is a short week and House programming will focus on two important activities: voting in the student elections and updating Name Coach. Name Coach allows students to record the correct pronunciation of their names, which then appears alongside their name in gmail and other school platforms. This small step plays a big role in fostering belonging and respect—it ensures that every student is addressed accurately and confidently by teachers, staff, and peers. Middle School students will be doing this in the upcoming weeks.

A Message from the Heads: Cissy Goodridge & Deirdre Timusk

Dear Parents & Students,

The surprise return of Winter arrived just in time for our Disney themed Athletic Assembly! Teachers and members of our sports council belted out songs from Frozen, in a fun filled assembly that honoured the athletic achievements of our students. 

Later in the week, Kelly Beale, who leads Ontario’s Legal Support Program for Victims of Human Trafficking, met with our parents and Grade 9 students.  She provided insights into how trafficking situations can develop—including online interactions and deceptive relationships—and offer strategies for fostering open conversations at home.

On Thursday we were delighted with the sounds and talents of our students at Senior Music night. The program featured music from a variety of genres and it was a wonderful way to end a busy week. Congratulations to all of our performers!

As we look forward to our upcoming long weekend, we’d like to wish Happy Passover to members of our community who are celebrating this weekend. May this time be filled with joy, connection, and rest for all. Wishing everyone a safe and relaxing weekend!

Empowering Excellence Progress Update: Year One

A year ago, we launched our Empowering Excellence Strategic Plan. As strategy expert Kathleen Eisenhardt puts it, “Strategy answers two basic questions: Where do you want to go, and how do you want to get there?” For us at Havergal, the answer is clear: to solidify Havergal’s position as a world leader in girls’ education by ensuring the long-term wellbeing and success of young women, empowering them to be change agents of the future and to make a positive, lasting difference in the world. 

Focusing on three key pillars — Connection, Wellbeing & Belonging, Future-Ready, and Transforming Tomorrow — we’ve begun our commitment by investing in programs, people and our campus.

We are pleased to share a Year One progress update, with key highlights and milestones we have achieved together. These initiatives underscore our commitment and build upon Havergal’s 130-year legacy of delivering excellence in girls’ education. We look forward to continuing our journey to prepare girls for success in every possible version of the future.

Parent Satisfaction Survey Reminder

A friendly reminder to please complete our parent satisfaction survey by Wednesday, April 16. You should have received an email last week from Independent School Management (ISM) with a survey invitation. If you have not received it, please contact surveys@isminc.com or parentsurvey2025@havergal.on.ca, and we will resend it.

This anonymous survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and is confidential. We would appreciate learning more about your experience with Havergal and look forward to your feedback.

In Form Program This Week

In Form this week, the students will be participating in MS House Games. On Tuesday, MS students are encouraged to wear a House colour accessory. This is NOT a dress down day and the accessory will have to be removed for Period 1. Our Grade 12 leaders have planned “minute to win it” battles between the Houses and the winning house will have points awarded towards our newly released Form Cup.

Rwanda Revisited: An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Rwandan Genocide in Grade 12

For the past 13 years, the Social Sciences department has hosted an evening of dialogue for Grade 12 students taking law, world issues, economics, politics, world history, and philosophy. The focus of this evening has been to bring interdisciplinary conversation around the events and case-study of the Rwanda genocide, and with a general question leading us to inquire, “What is the role of the social sciences in interpreting world-historical events of genocide?” This year, students will again participate in discussion and be treated to conversation with two very special guests—Associate Professor Ira Wells (Victoria College, UT) and former Deputy Prosecutor for the ICC, James K. Stewart.

Resume Checks for Grade 11 and 12 Students

For the month of April, the Guidance Department and HR Specialists are partnering to help Grade 11 and 12 students prepare for success. Students will have the opportunity to get their resumes checked by HR specialists. This is a great opportunity for students to improve their resume’s format, wording, professionalism and boost their chances of landing an interview.

In Grade Programming Next Week

This week, students in Grades 9 to 11 will hear Grade Rep speeches during morning programming. Meanwhile, our graduating students will be working with our Director of Student Leadership to explore how to navigate some of the sticky situations they may encounter in university.
