Dear Families,

It is wonderful to see our students continue to be excited and engaged. On Tuesday, we were honoured to host Holocaust survivor, Georgine Nash, who spoke to us about her experience during WWII. The student leaders of the Jewish Student Affinity Group arranged for this to mark Holocaust Education Week in Toronto. The Ellen Knox Library was filled to capacity by students, faculty and staff. It was an outpouring of support that was truly moving.

On Thursday, Havergal parent Bishop Jenny Andison and her daughter, Charlotte, led us in a celebration of All Saints Day. It was inspiring to learn that everyday people can join the ranks of our beloved Saints simply by being good neighbours who live in service to others. We learned how All Saints Day is relating to Hallowe’en (All Hallows Eve) and it was wonderful to be able to celebrate both holidays in the same week.

Other noteworthy events ran the gamut from total fun to more serious and constructive. Our students were dressed to the nines for Halloween, and the Senior Year Presidents led a raucously fun assembly. Midweek, the Student Council ran a Chomp Chat allowing students to bring up issues with members of the administration and faculty on topics such as the school uniform, leadership structure, morning programing and athletics. Students had many thoughtful ideas and wanted to help improve their school. Their feedback and ideas have been recorded and will help to inform our decisions as we move forward into our planning for the rest of the year.

Best regards,

Cissy Goodridge, Head of Middle School

YouthSpeak: Presenting to Grades 9 & 10 on November 16, 2022

On Wednesday, November 16th, students in Grades 9 & 10 are invited to attend an engaging, youth-led interactive presentation by YouthSpeak on the effects of substance use and addiction on their mental health and wellbeing. The guest speakers will address a variety of potential risk factors for substance use including self-esteem level and peer pressure with the overall goal of supporting the development of positive coping and decision making skills when confronted with choices regarding substance use. Youth speakers will share their personal experiences to increase awareness of the potential risks and implications of substance use while conveying a message of self-empowerment and hope. We hope that the lessons learned from the youth speakers and discussion can inspire an ongoing dialogue in the home that brings our students closer together with their families; where they can express their emotions, and also seek assistance for further mental health support when they need it. If you have any questions please reach out to Dr. Yarmey
